my model number for my 2001 Johnson 50 hp tiller steer has a v in it I've looked it up but all I can seem to find is that v means special gear case, can anyone please tell me what is this so called special gear case . I've just bought this outboard and would really appreciate knowing the answer to this, thank you

It probably means that the gear ratio deviates from the standard, something also known as "high thrust" for outboards that must move heavy boats.

Is it a "commercial" motor ? They usually had more reduction in the gears, different water pump too probably.

not to my knowledge, but it is rope start the model number is BJ50RVLSIB if that helps, the b is strange to me as well but I have trouble remembering if it's the hook or me that goes in the water. But I do enjoy.

well on the plate it says 10-01 and the si in the model number stands for 01 as well, so from all I've checked it is a 2001, and the v is in the proper spot to mean special gear case, as well as Johnson info sites with records on 50 hp 2001 Johnson's show that 2001's with model numbers starting with BJ and having the V in the proper spot to be special, they just don't tell what special gear case mean, but like I've said I don't know much about these, except what I read on the motor it's self and what little I can find on different Johnson/evinrude sites, but on the bracket it does show it to be made in oct of 2001, so I don't know, in my search I have seen where someone else 4 years ago ask the same question about what he said was a 2001 Johnson 50 hp with a V, but that question was unanswered ,, I'd just like to know for sure what was meant by special gear case,

The suffix for Belgium just means the engine was assembled in Antwerp, Belgium. It says nothing about quality or performance and the word "assembled" should not be taken literally.
By shipping the engine to Europe in two parts, import duty is lower than for a complete engine....

Belgium had a full assembly line like Australia, not sure when it closed but most likely 2001 on the bankruptcy ( not all models assembled)
Merc also have factory in Belgium and Australia (Belgium still going) doing assembly but that stopped late 70's now just headquarters and warehousing
The Merc and OMC Belgium ( Brugge) were also the race headquarters for Europe during the hey days late 60's and 70's

so let me ask if I might, to make this electric start all I need is a starter, solenoid, battery cables starter button and a couple pieces of wire, right???, all I want is to use it to start, I can manually charge the battery when I charge my trolling battery.

yes my motor has the flywheel with teeth for the starter, and the thing for rope starting an electric start only, holes threaded for mounting the starter, the nut on the engine I guess for the grounding wire, a hole with a rubber plug on the other side for the battery cables and a spot on the tiller plate to accept the start button, today I found a parts manual for this motor with the B suffix on the model number all the model numbers match but for the v, acceptable trade off I feel, and on top of that I found a 800 page service manual that also covers my engine,of course all on the net or web however it's said,,, all of ya'll have been very helpful and I thank each and every one of you.... very ,very much for your time and your knowledge ,,, I guarantee you i'll need more help, hehe, ya'll are great,,,,,,
