Jolly, the Chisos was one of my favorite trips. Met two friends in Vegas, drove to Big bend. Camped for a week, hooked up with three gals for the second week, went to Guadaloupe, White Sands, Carlsbad. It's the perfect time of the year to be there, too.

Looks like a before and after picture for a weight loss programme.

The shrimp boat Darway was sinking so they beached it on Galveston's west end. 1970

That French rail project I believe was a Maglev one and the track was around Poitiers, I remember seeing it there in about 1969. Looked quite futuristic to me as a young boy!.

    Transrapid

I was working over out of Singapore in the mid 90's when they came to an international transportation show that was hosted there. I found it fascinating as I had always been interested in monorails, and wondered why they had not seen more widespread acceptance.

Bangkok was in the process of looking thru 3 different mast transit systems for their city, and again since that town is built on a swampy river delta, I wondered why they would even consider a subway system?? Why not an above ground system that could largely fabricated off-site, then brought in and erected intown,...and much less susceptible to the flooding that all of Thailand experiences??

I think the one negative aspect of the Transrapid system is the very large extra expense of the 'mag-levitation' option. Not all such trains need to travel that fast. The linear electric drive is a great and somewhat simple aspect of that train.

Sounds like something we might have tried if we had horses. ;)
My friends and I once pulled a fish seine out through the surf with a canoe and hauled it back in by hand. All we caught were striped mullet and a few small sting rays.

In that highly dense populated area we live in, I think every penny would have been worth it. Just to avoid the noise from all the trains around here.

It was so amazing: Inside there was nearly no noise at all and standing outside as the train passed it was just a 'SSSSSShhhhhhhh'. At a speed of 380km/h.
