Hello Learjet, I looked at you photos a little more closely and it appears your mainmast is stepped in the yawl/sloop location. This corresponds to your mizzen step on the aft end of your pilot house which is about the yawl location on a Cavalier/Vagabond. I think your rudder is set aft of that because of the inboard location making the boat technically still a ketch but with more of the yawl proportions. The ketch I posted has the main mast further forward. I'm posting a blow up of the yawl rig, sorry about the quality. To scale the boat is 36' long in the drawing.

Your main beam in the cabin is the second one like that I've seen, the other was on a Vagabond MK2 in California. Searunner designer Jim Brown said it was a good modification for the beam layout on his Brown 41 ketch design when I was researching making one of those more ergonomic.

    Aquila

This is quite a coincidence !!
Tony Stemmett, original builder of Aquila is my uncle.
I was going through some stuff earlier today & found 3 old photos of Aquila the day it was transported by road to be launched.
Aquila was moored in Simonstown for many years before being moved to Langebaan.
My uncle relocated to the UK about 10 days ago.
If you wish, I could probably put you in contact with him.

I have attached a couple of photos, but the quality is diabolical. I do not use / have a scanner, so I quickly used a phone camera to take photos of photos that are over 40 years old.
The photos are from the day Aquila was launched.
If you wish, I can have them scanned. My mother has a few photos of Aquila somewhere as well.

    Grant

Thanks for posting Grant, any info on these boats is always good news. I'm sure this will help Learjet.

Wow! Grant thank you so very much for the info and the pics! If you have a chance to scan them it would be much appreciated, or if you are in Cape Town and would like to bring them to my offices sometime I can have them scanned for you and have a chat over coffee. I'll pm you my contact details.
I did manage to meet Tony some years ago at his house in Hout Bay and he also had some marvelous pics of Aquila which he showed me - but alas we never made arrangements to have copies made back then. Please convey by good wishes to him.
    Kind regards,
    Dave

    Interesting Ads

Renegade is up for sale again (Boatpoint Ad): Note old ad and price :) also advertised hull date... guess the older one is correct since the ad appears in the a 1966 publication.

Lot of history in that boat. The ad is for Hedley Nicol's own Vagabond 1. Renegade like Hedley's Privateer and my boat is a Vagabond MK2. I think Shawn Arbor did the major renovation of Renegade, the pilot house, open cabin has to be great for the heat.

Vagabond 1 was lost on a post race delivery for her new owner. The crew didn't keep to the instructions and apparently tried to sail across Breaksea Spit in a storm with disastrous results. Vagabond 1 was found weeks later capsized and flooded without the rig but mostly intact. The coast guard pulled it to pieces trying to lift the boat without draining the water out first.

Good spot Corely! I've emailed Allan Nicol to see if these are his offering. I keep hoping he'll start printing plans from the transparencies again.

Looking good Glenn, I'm finishing up my main cabin interior in time for the summer, I'll post pictures when it looks presentable.

Whatever happened to uNbound, Comet? He looked like he had a good Wanderer project. Hopefully someone is still working on it.

just about ready to do an engine swap
take out the 12 hp yanmar and 3 to 1 box and replace with perkins103 10around 25 hp with a 2 to 1 box . be nice to get rid of the noisy single cylinder yanmar and have some quiet . and hopefully pickup a few knots as well

What kind of prop are you going to use? The 2 -1 box will need a smaller prop for the revs....if you don't have a folder that will help with drag too. 25 HP should let you pick up a couple knots.

I'm still a fan of the Yamaha 9.9 OB, though I'd like to get it off the stern. A simple solution is a F27 style mount through one of the quarter decks but I'm looking at sleds too.
