why can't they dredge dams with suction tubes?

A realistic solution to the problem of silting behind dams would be of great benefit in the long term. One main problem is that no one who ever proposed a dam has any interest in the long term. Geologically, all dams and the lakes behind them are temporary and doomed to produce the level valleys that we can see in the natural world. Many of these valleys were formed behind natural dams that resulted from some other geologic event.

In most cases, other than very small dams, I suspect that the only solution to sediment accumulation is to remove the dam. Some small dams on local rivers are being removed since the reason they were built has passed long ago.
