There is studied ignorance, and there is congenital igrnorance. Either a person refuses to learn to read, or if they can read, refuses to do the research, or if they do the research, refuses to accept anyone elses opinion.

With the magic of the internet, 12 year old minds can find the studied answers to questions like this in seconds.

"This seems like a huge amount of CO2, but a visit to the U.S. Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) website (http://cdiac.ornl.gov/) helps anyone armed with a handheld calculator and a high school chemistry text put the volcanic CO2 tally into perspective. Because while 200 million tonnes of CO2 is large, the global fossil fuel CO2 emissions for 2003 tipped the scales at 26.8 billion tonnes. Thus, not only does volcanic CO2 not dwarf that of human activity, it actually comprises less than 1 percent of that value."

and please - before anyone comments on this one paragraph - go and read the whole article before bursting into inane comebacks.

What does this have to do with boats?

Isn't there already a thread for debating this?

This is the BOAT DESIGN thread.

Talk about people who don't read.

Hoyt what else are you supposed to do with medical waste? It is all incinerated, and many hospitals are adding cogeneration to their furnaces... Do you think they bury your gall bladder when it's removed? Does it gets its own little casket, or burial plot?

Electric boats are charged off the grid, as are radios and RC boats with rechargeable batteries, as are trailer boats with trickle or float chargers.

There is a difference between medical waste and wasted lives.

    >you believe in god but not agw. classic..<

Folks that do not believe in God do nor believe in Nothing,

Instead they will believe in ANYTHING.

They are the most environment friendly if charged at night , as a Nuclear Plant , the worlds cleanest energy source does the work.

At best, I see maybe 400 years of proven scientific records to compare gas levels in the earths atmosphere (and I am aware of the ice core drilling, ect where they project the atmosphere's gas levels based on the ice comp). This is to offset a planet 100's of 1000's of years old where natural cycles of cold and hot, rich and poor, ect can last (like an ice age) 1000's of years.

I fail to believe that anyone can say 100% for sure that whats happening isn't part of any cycle that we do, or potentially dont know about.

    Discovery,

We aren't 100% sure that anti-biotics will cure strep throat does that mean you don't want it?

We aren't 100% sure that cancer will kill you, so does that mean that we should do anything about it when it's discovered?

Science doesn't deal with certainty it deals with probablilities because the best current knowledge is always subject to change based on new information. That degree of uncertainty is no excuse for failing to take action today.

Is that a classic 'sunday morning sermon' theme , or just another one of those snappy, meaningless sayings used by the willfully ignorant ?

As far as 'believing anything', one of lots of examples is when Galileo invented the telescope, the religious authorities wouldn't even look through them to see if they worked - as they were 'tools of the devil', and might warp their 'enlightened minds'

For a nowadays example , I don't see any comment about the estimates of volcanic CO2 in your reply - reading the article might have pulled a thread from your life security blanket, and let in too much light.

It's probably a good time to look back at the original goal of the thread which was to gather information and ideas about non-fossil fuel propulsion options, technologies and companies working on such technologies for commercial ships:

I hardly worry about todays horror story hoaxes , after all the Club Of Rome in the 1960 era assured us that by 1980 we would be out of oil , out of food and millions and millions would die of starvation daily.

    Still waiting.

Genuine scientists tell us we are in an interglacine era , the ICE will be coming back.
Should some global warming actually happen I dont think a degree or two will hold back a mile of glacier bearing down on NYC.

    Still waiting.

If you want to contemplate the Possible , instead of just useless GI_GO computer speculation , think what one single Nuke popped off a hundred miles up would do to our society.

    N. Korea has the launch ability , and religious nut cases may have the ability to PAY N Korea for their effort..

We would have the huge starvation / dislocation etc the left dreams of , in a few seconds.

Nothing with a transistor or circuit board (except hard military stuff) would work with out a replacement.

    NOTHING!

Now there IS a nightmare you can envision , even with out a consensus of paid mouthpieces.

SAIL power will still work , but it will take time to grow the donkeys or oxen required to move wagons to the docks.

Open your eyes, knob end. 99% of what the population believe is because the media tell it, and the media make the "truth" depending upon who's paying the bills. The scientists (who don't want to lose their cushy study grants) can pull enough statistics to make just about ANY story believable. You, my friend, are obviously a "sheeple", or a scientist - it doesn't matter because the media is on your side. Classic example, airbags. Everybody knows that the increased cost makes a car safer, but the accidents still happen. The real statistics show that the rate of crash survivability has actually gotten worse ( only by a small percentage though) since the introduction of airbags.

In line with the spirit of logical discussion suggested by the moderator, I would like to politely point out that the article was a carefully calculated and detailed mathematical analysis of the volcanic CO2 emission, not something that deserves to be relegated to the ranks of supposition and hoaxes.
