Trolling valves

    The potential for problems in transverse mounting an engine - be it propulsive of generator - would be greater in a sailing vessel, as the boat remains heeled one way for extended periods, whereas in a powerboat (you would hope!:D ) you only have worry about rolling.
    The genset in our 48 ft Offshore is mounted transversely in the lazarette - no problems that we've encountered.

    Another thing I just thought of with hydralics is the noise. I've installed some hyd. bow thrusters and they are very noisy. This is not a problem with intermeadete use but to run for hours on end would be hard to handle. Don't get me wrong I'm not dowm on hyd. I like the idea, just seems many problems, but I guess there lies the chanange:)

    Not sure that the noise is as a result of the hydrolics - we have an electric bow thruster and it sounds like the front of the boats about to drop off every time you use it !
