Petrol = gasoline = fuel storage questions.

    Dries nice too see that you are ok in Richards Bay.
    And yes the experiment with the fuel is on going. As it stands now with our "magic fuel" who will ever know if it's E10 or E20? you actually don't have to worry too much. I run the engine dry every time before I take the boat home. When I get home I also open the little drain screw at the bottom of the float bowl on the carburettor and leave it half open. The next time I want to go out I first disconnect the fuel line at the carburettor, and with the "bulb" rubber hand pump I pump all the old fuel out of that pipe that goes from the engine cowling to the carburettor. This way I ensure that only clean fresh fuel will enter the carburettor. That 3 tablespoons of rotten fuel in those pipes will give you endless headaches - been there and got the t-shirt! Now once I see fuel dripping out of the float bowl I then screw the drain in and ready to go. I always test my motor in a bucket at home first and let the motor run for 20 min, that way I don't have any nonsense at the dam :D

    Yes Manie,

    It does seem, as you have said in the past, that 98% of all engine starting woes can be traced to the fuel system.

    I got my little Suzuki 30 going last weekend after it stood for a while, and sorting out the fuel supply line was the answer. Now it sounds like a sewing machine just sweetly humming away...Man those Suzuki's are nicely made engines.

    Having said that, the new motor I went to look at turned out to be a 6 hp Johnson 4 stroke, 2006 model in pristine condition. My friend Google told me later that they are nowadays sold as, you guessed it, the Suzuki DF6.....
    For R6000 I think I can do worse ( that is USD545 for everyone else reading this)

    What a bugger-up:
    When they say you don't buy a motor after only running it in a bucket, heed the advice.
    I ran the motor in a bucket, after it was serviced nogal.
    It idled sweetly, purring and kittens come to mind.
    I noticed a wee bit of oil in the bucket afterwards, jury is still out on that one.
    This afternoon I bolted her to my plywood sailing dinghy and took the whole affair for a spin.
    Nou ja, as it turns out the little gem would not rev up beyond, I guess, 1200 RPM
    No matter what I did.
    With the boat unladen, or two kids for ballast, no difference.
    Suppose there is a high speed jet in the carb that is blocked.
    It is going back to the workshop tomorrow. Lucky I have not paid for it yet.
    One more thing. My dinghy does not like going faster than 6 or so knots without her centerboard in.
    Water came gushing out the trunk like the river Nile in flood.
    At least some lookers-on were entertained.

    And the sumbitch ate my right forefinger's nail. Me not looking, and, CRUNCH.

    Ouch. >:-(

    I have now acquired, sight unseen it might be added, a Sail 15hp two stroke.
    Hope it was not a cat in the bag...(for $500, so maybe worth the risk.)

    And by the way, the rings in the Johnson were shot, so who knows how much damage to the cylinder surface? (the mech measured low compression, so this is the deduction, Don't think they have opened the motor up yet.)

    In the meantime we are bracing for a shocker of a cyclone, which will screw up our weather for at least six hours on Friday.

    Gotta love Zululand!
