Mast weight

I am baffled at the purpose of the bolts, but I am certainly not going to mess with them. The boat seems to be solid and as well attached as when new.
However, the mast is just too heavy, even if it has worked fine for 35 years. A "normal" weight/section alloy mast by today's standards, synthetic stays and a modern furler will save over 150 lbs- all in the air. It has to be worth the effort. I need new stays anyway and the mast has quite a lot of corrosion so I have plenty of justification for a replacement. Also a couple of feet longer might be nice if it works out. I am shopping, and I will see what turns up. I would be interested in hearing what masts other B-33 have on them now.

I have just started reading Robin Knox-Johnston's book "A world of my own",
about his non stop solo sail around the world.
Paul Webb called the tri you have---- "ROBINOX".
When you have finished restoring it, will you still call it that ---or are you going to give it a new name. ?

Patrick, the short answer is- I don't know. I know I won't use the current name "Sunrise", and I have given it some thought, (and had lots of suggestions) from friends, but nothing has taken yet in my mind. I sort of feel that "Robinox" is out of date and I am totally changing the boat, so maybe it should be something new. I do think it is almost easier to completely rebuild the boat than to properly name it I might wait until I have launched and sailed it some to decide what it "feels" like.
On the rebuild progress report, I have the trial folding system ready to try, and most of the mounting details worked out. I am in the market for a lighter and slightly taller mast, but I will use the current one if that doesn't work out. I can always change a mast later, and most of the rigging would still fit. I am replacing all standing rigging with synthetic.

Bruce. I'm sure that when you have launched and sailed the Tri a new name will be revealed to you from your subconcious mind. I find that things like that happen all the time.

 

Voices in your head

I think after a day spent upside down sanding the bottom, I do hear voices.

Could be worse Bruce, I was persecuted for not hearing voices in my head but things are a bit different in the PNW.......So were they saying things like, "You missed a spot!" or "Hire that guy at the yard." ?

Buzz, I have a big ego, but not quite enough to name the boat after myself
I am bringing a float home to work on this week, so I should have some pics soon of it "un-decked". It should be interesting.

name changes

I don't know if it is Karma or what, but the current Boat US magazine has an article on "how to properly change the name of a boat" and not bring bad luck on ones self. It does not address returning it to the original.

i think the trick would be not to read Boat US, cause until now I didn`t know that was a possibility.
