    Anode

You can always add an Anode to the lower unit

This year the motor popped right off, I push off from the dock, go to kick it in gear and my shift lever doesn't move, neither forward nor reverse. Any ideas how to fix it? Is it easily fixable or am I better off finding another used motor?

    Thanks in advance!

Does not sound like you do much maintanance ..first check the gear box oil..then lube the operating shaft into the gearbox as clearly something has corroded whilst not in use. Will look in my parts manual for any possible areas for trouble

If you like it get another

Thanks! Just downloaded the repair manual and will check into it. The only maintenance I would do is engine oil and clean out the carb in the spring. To tell you the truth, I thought the gear box was hermetically sealed and didn't need maintenance. Thanks for the heads up!!

    Shifting Rod slipped

    Pistnbroke,
I changed out the gearcase oil and things still wouldn't move so I took a look at the rod and sure enough it had slipped. I loosened the set screw and placed the shift handle into the neutral position and retightened. When I fired the engine up, at 'neutral' there is a very slight rotation of the prop. So I found that true "neutral" is right at the tab that protrudes on the housing the separates Neutral from Reverse. Any tips on adjusting to True Neutral?
    Thanks!!

    Flanged Bolt ID

Hi all! I readjusted and got the shift rod in the proper place but during the course of the repair lost the flanged bolt that works in tandem with the nut to hold the gear casing/prop to the upper half.
What type of bolt is it? Is it metric?
    Thanks!
I found the screw/bolt and bought it online. Thanks!

I just recently bought one of these by the serial number I'm guessing it's 03 has killsswitch on handle. But my problem is I'm assuming the Rev limiter. After reading and researching I think I have done everything but replace the part. What's happening is at about half throttle I start getting a rhythmic pulse that torques the whole motor. Then I unplugged the wiring harness to it the problem stops. I cleaned carb last night read somewhere that could help but no. I took apart and wiped down the whole fuel pump revisited assembly leading to carb. I guess my question is in the meantime until I can afford the part is running it unplugged going to hurt it. Or maybe there is something else I can do to fix it.

you are making the big mistake that many 5hp owners make .....the rev limmiter is cutting in because you are running it out of water and the reves are going ove 4200 so the rev limiter is cutting in.
In water the load keeps it down to 4000 and it will be fine .do not run with the rev limiter disconnected.
Fit one of those pulse tacho so you can see the rpm..

Now get out on the water.

Thank you for your response. I'll give this a whirl. Will it kick off immediately or does it need to work out its problems that I apparently created? See I was told hey its sir cooled no biggie u can run it out of water. This being my first outboard I don't really know better. But I figured while purchasing it that we'll it's a lawnmower how hard can it be to fix.

yes you can run ito out of water but not rev it over 4000. it has no problems the only problems is in your head .
There is no outboad that you can run at full throttle without load
