How to select optimum boat propulsion system?
I'd like to ask for suitable free references -books, research, pages- to study how to select optimum propulsion system according to the boat lines and transom shaps. I hope to get your personel view points, as well.

The boat lines and transom shapes are rather secondary to the propulsion system choice. There are other requirements that will determine your range of options. For example, type of fuel available, target speed of the vessel, vessel size, depth of water in operating area, available parts and service, etc.

Gonzo, thanks for your valuable reply, that's why i'm asking for suitable references to approach my point. Besides, i'm talking about Motor Boats up to 18 meter at most....

    Please define Optimum.

Speed , efficiency, noise , fuel burn , longevity , choose one.

And tell about the boat desired. 21 ft ?, 6000tons ? , Tug ? , every requirement will be different.

If there was a single optimum boat and motor , there would only be one boat style built worldwide.

For my boat - a trawler style - I just want a standard ol fashioned prop'n shaft setup.
Motor - V drive incl gears - shaft and prop.
    I 'discovered' Tony's site sbmarine.com - awesome information there!from boatdiesel site.
    Helped me understand so much.
I'm a boat builder but not engineer.
If any one wants to help, I will post pic of hull with spec's.

I just want a standard ol fashioned prop'n shaft setup.

For low cost and almost the longevity of a Detroit Diesel (without the weight) the 6 cylinder International DT 360 or 466 is always my first choice.

Dry stack , keel cooled , with simple overhead hatches , so a change out is a 1 day project if ever needed..

Probably the 360 is larger than required , so a cruise prop (slightly over sized) will allow good loading at cruise RPM.

    Good hunting,,

    Cheers bud,
    Nice setup yep.
Dry stack requires motor midships, prefer at the transom with geared V drive, no keel so no keel pipes.....
I don't have the knowledge to set up prop sizing etc inc gear ratios in box, thats where I need help.

    So here's been my preferences:
Aft mounted diesel motor - HP to suit planing 13 deg x 9.6M LWL 9Ton hull.
V drive box geared inc forward/reverse.
Wet exhaust - exit just below lwl for noise.
    Fresh water heat exchanger.
No fancy electronics on motor - turbo'd ok.

Just an observation, I have read of hulls coming off the plane when going up the back of a swell then having to 'boot it' down the other side to get back on the plane, so need to be prop'd enough to over come this where I play - the Indian Ocean straight out the harbour heads.

    I also like Cummins!

IF the boat is metal, having a keel cooler is simply an internal welded box with passages.

Saves a big seawater pump, heat exchanger and cleaning jellies out of the intake.

A small sea water pump can be used to cool the wet exhaust .
