Shallow Draft & Standing Headroom (Pipe dream)

Ha! My example with the reef was totally hypothetical & a poor example. I was mainly interested in feeling how the retracting/extending behaved while under way under good winds on a beam reach.

As a skipper I would only use it as you point out (e.g. easing into shallow harbors).

Do you know if any charter companies operate these Seaward boats? I would like to sail one down in Florida and/or the Caribbean at some point. I actually began to turn away from monohulls and towards catamarans because of this shallow draft issue.

There is a marvelous perfectionist restoring/has restored the famous lifting asymmetric board (plural), Bruce King designed Terrorist, a One Ton design. And which would have been champion had her rig not gone down in 1974(?) series. There's your pipe dream boat with shallow draft (with both boards lifted) and excellent performance, especially to windward with her sophisticated foils. Just type in Terrorist in search engine here.

 

Interesting concept and I agree there is some merit to that Bruce King design. Today's open 60's, 70's, etc. all have a very looooong single canting keel. Though the new boats are fast, forget about shallow water access.

Perhaps someone will come along & re-kindle the concept and build a nice production boat.

Just contact Seaward Yachts and explain that you would like to do a trial sail. If they don't have a demo boat, they may point you to someone who could take you out for a sail. I spoke with their sales dept. and with the owner of the company, Nick Hake, yesterday, to verify the answer to the headroom question, and they are aware that this thread is on-going--although I did not mention any posters' names. They sold a 46 at last week's St. Petersburg boat show, and they told me that the exit polls at this year's Chicago Boat Show voted Seaward the best boats at the show. They are pretty proud of that.

For standing head room -
Rosyln Sharpie type = 48' LOA
Presto type = 43' LOA
Meadowlark type =37' LOA

Not small boats. Each would weigh in at around 8 tons lightship.

What about a lifting cabon top, like the English Norfolk Broads Yachts have? The question is how to engineer it to be strong and watertight offshore, but it would be an interesting one to invesitgate. There was a racing boat designed by Julian Everett around 10 years ago which had all internal ballast and asso bilge boards, was called Revolution 21st or something.

The other way to get standing headroom at anchor is a full cockpit tent enclosure. Lots of people have them in Scotland, and with clear PVC windows you get close to 360 degree views. The front end of the tent is just the sprayhood, the rest velcroes and snaps on in about 5 mins. Most people who have them say it saved them buying a bigger boat, and they spend more time in them than in the cabin. A Tille y pressure paraffin lamp heats and lights them nicely, even in winter.

 

As long as posters are citing various small boats with standing headroom, I'll offer my Delft 25, which is a DIY design in plywood that has 6' to 6'-3" headroom.

Thanks for the information guys. Glad to hear Seaward is getting good feedback from customers. I'm primarily charter sailboats/yachts for short cruises (e.g. while on vacation). I'll touch base with them to see if they are working with any charter operators. If not, I'll probably arrange a test sail at some point. Florida/Gulf coast states with shallow harbors would be a good market, as would the entire Caribbean (and customers who sail to/from there.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm not sure of your experience with old (pre-PC) photo editing techniques, but maybe some "dodging" is in order . . .

 

The only change, really, is my hair and beard are whiter, and the hair is covered by a hat. If I dodged out the beard--I'd disappear!

 

My profile photo shows my beard, as it was about 15 years ago and I'm not willing to "up date" it either.

 

Ran across an ancient reminder in a to-do list to check this thread. Figured I would update it. No I didn't win any lottery, and I didn't quite stick to my limitations, but I did end up with a '71 Pearson Wanderer 30. 3.5' draft, so it is a bit deeper than I wished for, but the price was right and she looks properly yachty in a classic way.
