Well of course at some point the CF strut becomes a boom, but when you can buy 8cm diameter CF battens http://www.fiberfoam.net/app/download/5420103959/Fiberfoam Produkt-Broschuere.pdf?t=1381985625 that's very close to a boomkin all by itself :)

The big issue of using a Batten vs an external strut is that even thought the batten distorts the surface of the sail somewhat, because the distortion is smoothed by batten pocket, you generate much less drag.

And because its inside the cloth itself, it doesn't need external control lines to be held in position - further reducing drag

    Doug,
I'm old. I have bad eyes. Could you please do something in your "updates" to highlight what has and has not changed? You could do this by using Word's "Compare versions" feature.

thanks - it would be very helpful to us handicapped folks

It's been updated, and it's important. That's all you need to know. ;)

    MPX Test Model

Pictures taken today at the park. There are two lakes, or I should say: one pond and a small lake. The place looks great except for:
    1) parking is a long way from either pond or lake,
    2) Both seem to require wading in at least 50' to be able to float the test model. I was hoping to run into the regulars and ask them about that and how deep the lake is toward the center. I'l have to try next week.
Their ad says that the city maintains the area well and that there are no weeds in either lake or pond.

Pictures,L to R, 1)-3) the north lake-west to east, 4)-5) the small lake(south to north), 6) The Gazeebo between the two lakes:

So I'm confused Doug... When you say "test model" in the previous post, do you mean the model you have been showing us you building? Or do you mean a different model that you are using as a "test model" for checking out the sailing area you will eventually sail your trifoiler in - whenever it gets completed?

Don't be confused and don't try to make sense of this particular endless stream of consciousness. I gave up trying a long time ago, and I'm happier for it.

These kinds of threads bring together rapid game switching, random silent moving of goalposts, nets, bases, targets and flexible interpretation of many technical words that clearly mean different things to you and the thread's hero.

I've found it is better to read these threads in a different mind set ... you see confusion about what the poster is even talking about - is it this model, is it a different model? I see a nice, sunny Florida park and green grass on a day with wind chill here at -20 and a snow storm coming tonight.

Chances are very high this thread will still be active in two years time with little discernable change.

    UPDATE:

Just noticed more pictures! I would like to give credit to whoever does the mowing in these pictures.

Doesn't that require a dynamics modeling tool to calculate? Doug do you have one at your disposal? If not I would recomend Minsky as it is free and fairly easy to use.

But could you again please do a delta for us?

Hope that helps Doug.... Makes it easier for us oldsters to understand what the changes are.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use a luff sleeve for the model? Messing around with bits of tiny tube and wires seems like a fair amount of work for no benefit.

That was my thought as well. I'm sure that we are missing something and Doug will explain where our thinking is off base.

10 inches of snow last 24 hours, -18 Celsius with wind chill - it sure doesn't feel like Thanksgiving. Frozen turkey for everyone!
