Well life goes on here in africa and time flying past and little progress on this boat .have ordered the last 34 meters of wood for stringers on underside and have started covering but am battling with radius at bottom and stuffed up a few pieces but know I will get there . Lots of rain again and boat took some water but lucky most Is covered with epoxy . Have done a lot of work on the other boat hopefully she will Splash on 21 December. well the summer has come and the rain with it and that does not help my cause much as boat is out side. Had a massive hail storm 2 weeks back hail the size of golf balls .windows and cars smashed plus boat covers all full of hole but besides all this am getting some work done and christmas break coming 3 weeks of should get the bottom covered and glassed and painted

Colin from what I can see is that my Garmin Nuvi 500 has been discontinued,
i will be going to Garmin on Monday to see what has replaced it.
I have to go there anyway because my maps have never been updated and I hope that they could still do it on a old machine.

What has come as a surprise is this:

the Echo 100 @ R 1099.00 is R 600.00 cheaper than I paid on a "special" sale 3 years ago. An excellent buy for a fish finder / depth sounder.

The waterway charts on Garmin and iPhone are very limited.

To my horror and surprise I have just discovered that the Garmin "37 inland dams" DOES NOT COVER - Gariep - Vanderkloof - Bloemhof.
For some unknown reason the iPhone Navionics dont cover these inland waters either. What works well on the iPhone is the compass that gives a satelite view from the sky, which is fantastic. So at least you can see at night time where you are in relation to the mountains - but no depths.

So bottom line is DONT BUY a GARMIN for the sake of the "inland dams" it is a waste of money. Why they have all the "pissolie" little dams and not the big three I just cant figure out ????

My Garmin Nuvi 500 was fantastic for the Vaaldam - BUT THAT'S IT - bit lousy to find that out 3 years later.
Anyway it is a good GPS and "speedometer"

So for my next adventure trips into the unknown - the fishfinder IS KING
without a depth sounder you will have problems.

What will you use when you go to gariep dam manie

 

I am fine out there with the Garmin that gives me a track - that I follow on the way back
And of course the depthsounder.

On my phone i place markers of potential danger spots - so on my way back its very easy to steer clear of the markers

well holidays are over and back to the slog at work again . was fortunate to get some work done on both boats and weather was fairly kind to us. did the last four srtingers on underside and now can start to close her up. am three and a half years into this project and have had such joy in the build with all the knoledge i have gained and was not one time that i thought dam i have to go work on that boat but now is my time to get the hull complete and in the water yipppppeeeeee.

so had a weeks leave last week and got on nicely . covering underside is a lot more work than i figured but will get there .made templates out of newspaper and it worked well

Dont know what your geographic region of navigation will be. Transas marine, a russian company , produces the best digital charts for worldwide coverage. These charts when used in a non commercial format are very competitively priced.

Isailor is the company who markets these transas charts to the pleasure market ...apple Ipad is the tool. It may also be available for other platforms.

The reason to choose IPAD is the brilliance of its screen , built in GPS and INternet access. Near chartplotter brightness at a fraction of the price.

For weather the IPAD program Weather Track is superb . Well worth a look . Its routing software, overlaid on GRIB files, is very practical.

Funny how time flies and before you know it summer is here again . Have made some progress with 90 % of underside covered. As always the weather is having its part as our rain has come but we need it. Will post photos soon
