    We need an update goodwilltoall

I started following this thread a little over a year ago, and have read every post. Some of it has been funny, some of it very interesting (I've learned a lot), and some of it just mean.

I've been checking back every now and then hoping to see an update on the progress of the project. It was pretty cool when goodwilltoall finally posted some photos of his progress a year ago in August of 2012. I was really hoping we'd see more.

I know many here meant well with their harsh commentary, but a lot of it just became argumentative and elitist. His religious beliefs seemed to take over the thread half of the time. He's a religious nut, so be it. I'm not, but I'm totally okay if he is.

The thing that got me is how much more senior and experienced boat builders seemed to just post about how hard and impossible boat building is, and to just adamantly advise against even considering building a boat. Post after post of discouraging comments. I've looked at many different threads in this forum, and there's always these guys who just advise people to buy a boat, it's easier/cheaper/safer, blah blah blah. Maybe they missed the domain name or something for the forum they were posting to, "BoatDesign.net." And at some point each one of these detractors was in the same position, building their first boat. They weren't born with the knowledge and skills, and they had to start somewhere.

For the past couple of years I've been thinking of building a boat. For mine I was thinking more along the lines of a small 8 foot fishing boat with a trolling motor. But then, I learn to do things better in smaller and more incremental steps..

I think goodwilltoall was doing okay for a while. He started out with a somewhat odd idea to build a yacht modeled after the Ark. But over time he incorporated others' advice and ideas, and what he ended up starting to build was nothing like an Ark. So he seems to have taken some of the advice offered here, despite all the mean and antagonistic delivery methods.

Anyway.. I'd love to see what progress you've made so far goodwilltoall, that is if you've continued the project. I find it interesting. An update would great.

Not many have been in a position of starting to build their first boat which is of 50ft and of their own design. Far fewer in this world are the ones who have finished their 1st boat which is 50ft and of their own design.

What gwta has shown is extreme arrogance towards facts and sound advise and twisting hearsay and conjecture into hopes and wished and justifications of bad decisions. It can be interesting to follow but sheering is not very clever.

And yes its a fact that buying used boat is cheaper. Its fine if one wants to knowingly spend more and build their own. Nothing wrong with that. Nobody here is saying that the dream of building own boat is foolish. Doing it in idiotic way with unrealistic idea of what is needed will result in unfinished projects (most likely outcome) or boats that will perform much worse than they could have. Both case mean huge amount of effort and resources wasted.

How is steering man clear from a bad decision mean and a bad thing?

And gwta is not willing to learn.

    Greetings,

This is all I could upload for now. Hope to have time to upload pictures soon, they arent much, visqueen is mostly off but it still covers portions of the top where the keel is so its hard to get a full size shot. For some reason the camera mixs up with the grey plastic above and keel shots become fuzzy.

The drawings is the sor and is the compromise settled according to wants and size. Still gonna play a little with the sail plan but it clearly shows a favor towards engine power. The keel is very deep and raked but necessary for the prop. and was also chosen as being a straight shot. The bow platform or whatever its called needs redrawn. Really set up for only two and way forward berth, any overnite guests would need some type of contraption over seat and desks.

Guestimate would be 120 hours last year and about 60 hours this year so far, had helper about 70% of the time. Hoping for slowdown with other work in a few weeks, take a short vacation, get new full size visqueen and conclude the hull build.

    quiet?
Plywood - even if crappy quality - is ton smarter than the planking shown in earlier pictures.

That is a big boat to turn around btw.

That's the number of posts he has made in this thread :)

I'd consult with a practicing naval architect before building anything larger than can be moved with my truck.

I credit Goodwill for his tenacity. Has a scale model been built before beginning the real thing?

    Greetings,

Several more pics: fillet, box keel tab, keel bottom.

Kerosene, Why do you want qualifications? go back to beginning of thread, it should speaks for itself. Is there something wrong with using your own money, time, and risks at sea? Notice: Anyone else trying to copy or use plans its buyer beware-do your own diligent study.

    Peace.
