Interest in becoming a yacht design

Hello Everyone,

I am a recent college graduate from the University of Pittsburgh. While in school I decided that I wanted to design yachts as a career with an ultimate dream of designing for the America's Cup. I have a strong background in mathematics, computer science, CAD, and physics. However, I haven't taken any formal education in engineering.

I would like it if any of you would be able to provide me some places to start my studying informally before I had back to school. If I decided to stay in the states I will probably be going to The Landing School.

Also, to give you a heads up, I have read, "Understanding Boat Design" by Ted Brewer, but became rather confused by some of his terms. Currently I am reading, "The Symmetry of Sailing." If you guys have another other suggestions please let me know.

Also note: University of Michigan might have a 1 year program for people like you with strong math/physics who want to become naval architects.

After sleeping on it I think you should also speak to Prof. Jerry Milgram (or Prof. Justin Kerwin if he hasn't retired yet) at MIT and look into the program in Canada associated with the Institute for Marine Dynamics (IMD).

If you want to look into studying composite structures you could speak to Prof. Steven Tsai at Stanford. Interestingly, Stanford also has a product design center headed by a top industrial designer, and Berkley has a graduate program in Naval Architecture.

You might also ask Tom Speer in these forums what he thinks. Aeronautical Engineering and yacht design are very related fields.
