Hey guys im new to the site. My name is Corbin. Im from Corydon, Indiana. I have helped several of my friends restore some older outboard boats. Im familiar with a little fiberglass and pretty good with woodworking. I am an engine builder and mechanic by trade. So I am pretty good with motors and such. I am really wanting to build a v drive type flat bottom boat. I looked into a jet drive but I understand the mechanics of the v drive a little better. Any and all input or direction is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum. A V drive is fine, though maneuverability with this and other straight shaft setups is less than stellar. Compared to an outboard or I/O setup an outright dog.

What is the boat (year, make, model) and why isn't an outboard preferred? The mechanics are the same, once you gain some familiarity with the beasts. Ditto I/O's and jets.

The Tornado is a V bottom, not flat. The comments above still apply. This boat only does one thing well, go fast in a straight line. It'll pound your dental fillings out pretty quickly in a chop, it's wet and can trip pretty easily at speed, but hell of a lot of fun to blast around in.

It would be a much better boat with an outboard or outdrive, in terms of maneuverability.
