Sounds like a useless manual. You really need to adjust timing under load conditions, commonly this was done with a 'work wheel' installed in place of a propellor and run in a test tank. Your timing may be OK the way it is, I would run through the check list of other possible problems you can actually do yourself.

you dont need a timing light but you will need a dial indicator to set the timing pointer

So if I get my hands on a dial indicator and set the timing pointer what do I do from there to adjust the timing itself?

not easy to explain but easy to show ( havent done this for 25 years)
you need a spark checker on plug 1 lead, turn the key on and you rotate the distributor by hand and it will fire therefore,
you move the flywheel to the correct position hopefully the timing sticker is on the flywheel or you will need the dial indicator to set the flywheel to the correct place then you turn adjust the primary pickup screw and the max timing by turning the distrib you will hear the spark and then set the screw to set the distrib movement.
Still need a manual to get the timing speck or the piston travel equivalent for the dial indicator.

Pull the distributor and check the split pin on the drive gear. It can break and the gear will spin 180 degrees and bind up on the broken stub of the split pin, causing a 180 out situation.
