John Bertrand skipper of the first "winged" Americas Cup boat who took it down under in 1983 talks about his boat breaking in half and sinking in 1995 and about today:

Excuse my ignorance, I've not been following the AC as closely as I should.
Could someone tell me in what directions the foils are adjustable?
    Thanks

    I Have a Thought...

In the video of the chance encounter of Team USA & TNZ I thought I saw a little, very little, rocking, tipsy, an "instability" in TNZ's attitude. They were foiling, but wobbling a bit. We also saw them take the nose dive where they lost crew overboard. Yesterday, they had a tricky upwind rounding, I thought they were gonna lose it, lol.

In all the Louis Vuitton races, there's been no racing, there's been no pressure on TNZ. I suspect that that may not be the case with Oracle.

If they do have to race, they are going to have to push their boat & it's design. I'm going to be watching for a very unstable New Zealand yacht. I've just got a feeling that they are shaky... not the crew, the design particulars of their boat. Not betting, just an observation.

Then again, the same may be said for Oracle too. We'll see.

Nice observations, however, you are assuming that NZ will use the same
configuration against Oracle. They beat LR very easily and maybe they did
not have to tip their hand.

Something for the 'Dark Knights' to contemplate, soon.

    34th AC

    =====================
The rudder foil is not adjustable while sailing, but the main foil pivots fore and aft(rake) and athwartship(cant) about the lower bearing . And the foils are retractable.

Be very, very wary of betting against TNZ or taking too much from what you've seen.
I'm 100% for Oracle but TNZ won't be easy to beat.

Hope you've all recovered, after that scare.

OK. Where does this opening AC34 theme music come from?

None of my kids recognize it, though they are movie experts, the lot.

I've spent an hour or so searching through Hans Zimmer compilations - it does sound like his work, after all, but I haven't found the same piece.

I thought I was close to finding it, listening to Zimmer's 'Dark Knights' theme, but that music constantly approached but didn't reach the same climactic level.

Kind of a shame I thought, because I'd have enjoyed discovering that the whole AC34 organization was making a statement; about being Dark Knights in the plural, in solidarity with Russell of course.

Did they commission Zimmer for something exclusive for the AC34? Or does this music come from somewhere else? I like it and would like to hear the rest of it, if there is any.

(If you don't know what music I'm referring to, it is for example the first 30 seconds of the 23 minute video of Race 7, on Youtube)

    Congratulations Kiwis!

    And Good Show, Luna Rossa!

    ...

How could anyone expect that Chris Draper should take starts from Dean Barker? That was never Draper's forté at all, while Barker's leading qualification back when all this started was his match racing skills.

I'm admiring Barker more and more. This is something in the way of an admission from me, since I had a skeptical regard for him as an incorrigible monohull die-hard back a couple of years ago.

But he's clearly enjoying this sailing and making a display of better multihull racing along with his team, than anyone has done before.

    ...

And Ray Davies said in the interviews afterwards (1'10''15 in the race tape), that "... We'll have a party tonight, and Dean will make a Dean Barker of himself, no doubt..."

    lol

This morning a trade engineer (who can barely read or write) pointed out to me a feature on these boats which has a strong influence over lift and stability. I have not seen this mentioned on this forum or during commentaries. Its effect can be calculated mathematically. I am going to sit back and see how long it takes for the experts to pick this up. Clearly, the designers are utilising it. It is very visible.

Sounds like the fairings, aft fairing in particular.
