Paul Kotzebue draws beautiful boats, and the free plans are very detailed. I'm in love with his K-39 .... If I ever win the lottery...... (Since I don't play, I'm slightly less likely to win than those who do.) BUT

Those boat are no more an easy/starter projects than a B24 or B28.

There would be some skills that would by trying for a newbie that wouldn't translate at all to multihull construction. Casting the keel for one.

The K8500 at 2800 lbs would cost more to build than a B24. The K5 at 4800 lbs. would likely cost more to build than a B28.

With free plans I doubt Mr. Kotzebue want to give lengthy support.

Resale value of boats that size with tiny accommodations and no class affiliation would be low.

Build one of those boats if that's the boat you want for a long time to come, not as a precursor to building a tri. Even if you want to build one of the mono's build the dink first.
I think what most people have in mind for a first project is something like the cold molded Petey Dink or something like it ~ 8 ft long.

When you are done you have a decent little dinghy and some experience.

Yeah, I agree, getting very off-topic. Those PK boats are monos, not multihulls, so if that's what you wantr to build maybe you should start a thread over on then monhulkl design section and see what the mono boys have to say.
I also agree with Bb that you should build something smaller, first, for I suspect you'll find a 28ft strip plank monohull is a lot more expensive to build than a Bucc 24

Buzz, i know is ALMOSt off topic, but, when we talk about B28/B33 in the B24 is OFF topic too, when we talk about fiberglass OT too. Buccaneer is the GOAl of my building, but, my first boat. i workes in a company 8 years tha build fiberglass industrial cooling tower, but, first, i need to be sure to use the small things i know with the buccaneer. I think as me, some other readers of these forums have the same questions i have, and , just 2 minutes to reply for the other members. BUCCANEER are beautifull boats, but, if you do it correct. if not, will be like frankensboats. B24/B28/B33 have some ART look, so, i do not want to have the only one ugly around the world. I thnik it will take to me around 3 months making CAD drawing of the B28 plans, a material list, get the materials outside my country, etc. So, i am just searching a good, almost big boat to perform costal cruiser, some offshore, mainly day sailing. I just asked to some experienced guys what they thinks about PK boats, not want to change the topic of this excelent treath. I started a topic yesterday about PK boats, but, not reply, maybe the other design does not want to talk about FREE plans, but, when i saw reggata on ESPN just boats like PK boats. ALL designs are made with grace, to me, all boats have their beautifull side, and the bad side. I WILL, not just want to, i will build a B28/B33 trimaran, but, even i ask today, i could start in the future. one of my problem is that in my country NO WOOD BOATS construction culture, just the COAST FISHING BOATS and others old design with fiberglass (Here cheap FG than wood). So, maybe you can just go to the bay near your home to see a Buccaneer alike boat, here, i need to travel to AUSTRALIA hehehe. I will not made the same mistake in this forums, just, B questions. thanks.

No worries mate. Just keep this thread for the Buccaneer!

As to building another boat to use in the interim while you are accumulating materials and building the Bucc, my advice would be to keep your eyes peeled for a small monohull sailboat or large dinghy to use for short exporatory trips along the coast.

You *should* be able to find something needing a small amount of work for a LOT less than it would cost to build the same boat, and much less than the cost of building the Bucc 28.

For example, near where I live, a chap is offering a 21ft mono that needsa bit of rigging work and possibly a sail or two for free. It's been used as a mooring minder and he doesn't want it any more.

Keep looking and something will turn up at the right price! Ask around sailboat clubs and yacht clubs. I fpeople know you're looking, and they hear of something, they will often let you know.

Buzz, that is right, want to build a simple boat to LEARN the sailing technique, and when i build my BUCC, go to the other side of the world to drinking beers with you hehe.
Americas are a big continent. Noth, colonized by england, has wood culture. latin-South America, colonized by spain, concrete culture. I live in caribbean Americfan, just the cukture to go to the beach to see our beautifull womens hehehe. As we USED lto live under the United State influence (Still, bad and good), we just bhought our boats, equipments, materials from USA. Only brazil, Argentina, Chile and other countries have a good boating culture, building, designing, etc. Even we have all sintetic materials here and we have good forest like amazonas, we have almost all our territory as natural reserve. If i need to cut a tree in the back of my house, i need to take a permission of the forest autority, nnational guard, etc. So, to us, is easy to buy outside hehehe. But now, i live near an industrial city, so, i know i can get poly/ep[oxy resing very easy and cheap compared with wood, imported material.
Pk and JUSt 1 hull, B28 has 3 hull, take your numbers. If you see the pictures of the PIRATE boat i sent, is almost EMPTY inside. So, just the hull and some other components to have a very small big boat.
I see pictures of the bucc boats, and i see TOO MUCH components to build faster. 4 beams, a lot of conercions beams/hulls, some reinforcements in the hulls, a good alignements of 3 hulls, a lot of windows, etc. I said PK just to get other comments about these boats, because i have NOT find any picturs of K28 or K8500 built.
BUCC are good boats to build, and to travel with it. A good never end design still loved, by you and by new lovers than me.

Talking about the mast, where can i get info to build, if possible, with fiberglass or fiberglass/wood, or is aluminium or aluminium?

Your enthusiasm is admirable but I fear in your enthusiasm you are overcomplicating what is a simple issue.

If you want to go sailing *now*, buy a small cheap boat that needs minimal work to get it sailing. Practise, race a bit, do a few overnights and if you still want to build the Bucc 28, start saving your money.

Aluminium mast profiles are NOT cheap - the mast and rig for the Bucc 28 would be about $7-10K if ordered new and rigged for you. A second hand mast that would do the job might be less than half that. If you can find one...

To build in wood there are two main options - build with solid timber, scarfing the pieces so that the mast is hollow and can be smoothed outside to round or almost round; or building a wing mast using timber or aluminium support and ply casing outside.

Gary Baigent built such a mast for his 'Alternative to Bucc 24' which is detailed in this thread
    http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/alternative-marvelous-buccaneer-24-a-32382.html

But such projects are for *EXPERIENCED* builders only. Not something you should attempt until you've at least built the main hull and/or floats of the Bucc 28.

Festina lente, mi amigo. Make haste slowly, my friend. :)

And start another thread to ask questions about subjects that are not directly to do with the Bucc 24/28.....and tell us the address, we'll follow you over and discuss your issues there.

    first boat

PH, Since you are interested in multis, try to find a "fixer upper" beach cat. I have seen them all over the caribbean, usually available cheap if they need some work. Try to find one with a good mast, with your glass experience, most everything else could be built with local materials, and they are really fun to sail.
My best glass shop employee learned fiber glassing by building cooling towers:cool:
He later built molds for production boats and several custom boats for himself and other customers, in addition to doing some of the best repair work I have ever seen. You just need to go find something small and get started, the rest will come easily.

Well, even the PK are monohull boats, if you read the specifications, they are made as i want to build the B28/33. Single skin hull, sandwich top. I ensure is the best way to use fiberglass, even you could spend 1 or 2 weeks making the mould. And, the K-28 is almost the same as the central hub of the B28, even simplest. So, i know they are different boats, but, not off topic, due if i change wood for FG, i am changing everything in the BUCC design. PK are NOT beachebles, not enought load, space, etc, but, beautifull first boat and you could get high skill in the building. The economical situation in the AMERICAS is not as hard as in USA or Europe, but, here is around 80% cheaper to build than to buy. Well, at leats you want to build some NORMAL or COMMON boat, but, is cheaper to build than to buy, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO.

    Buccaneer 24 Plans...

Hi all, here's another annoying request for plans. I tried sending Oldsailor7 a pm but I don't think I'm allowed to do that since I'm a new member. Hopefully he sees this and we can talk him into cranking out a few more sets of this great design.

This is actually my second post. I really wish I had something worthwhile to contribute. There's some very good info here. Maybe I'll find another section to fill with the emptiness of my next three posts and then come back here and try fitting in. :)
