A 50 foot cruiser that gets the mileage of an SUV

    Its official: The Xenocraft X-50 has passed the first stage of sea trials. When towed by an X-18 Volksboat using a single 6 hp. engine, the X-50 gets A minimum OF 13 mpg. And, considering the inefficiencies that are involved in towing (resistance of two main hulls, among other things), it will probably get much closer to 14 or 15 mpg under its own power. When being towed at 5.5 mph, it has virtually no wake and no bow wave.

    Please describe a Xenocraft X-50.......size, intended purpose, displacement, etc.

    A boat that moves at 5 knots, has no bow wave or wake, and can be propelled 5KPH with 6HP at 13 to 15 MPG is worthy of description, hopefully pictures.

    Lmao! I dare you cross an ocean or even a big lake, with only a 6hp engine... First bit of weather and you will be blown which ever direction the wind is going...

    Do the test again at hull speed and tell us the results, ie some useful information...

    And you didn't even bother to fair the hull...

    Groper and I both have reservations about the claims (reservations = polite expression for poo poo)

    Gonna need 50 Hp or more to make that boat one that could get across a stormy pond. Might survive in the ICW. No way I'm going into the Caribbean with it.

    The economy claimed is likely to go down the tubes when the boat is fully found. In fairness, I must give the builder credit for putting his money where his mouth is.

    After reading, if we do not find a buyer at this price, we are going to sell on ebay, BUT, if we then get buyers, our production boats will cost much more than these prices.

    I am not sure what to think.

    Their free test drive is being towed.

    Does it have an engine?

    Nope, its just an empty shell... and it would be more efficient if it had plumb bows for a longer waterline length.

    All displacement boats get fantastic econonmy when driven very slowly, like this was done... 4mph or about 3 knots... Take it upto 9 knots so we can compare performance with all the other boats out there, nobody does these kinds of tests at such low speeds because its useless information...

    I don't see anything out of the norm for power trimarans here. Any tri of similar dimensions and displacement should give the same fuel use results although I don't see that they have actually done any such testing. A basic design with small wetted area, decent shape to the hull and high L/B plus amas that are only for lateral stability (minimum immersion).

    I suspect they are in for a shock when they actually test a workable model. Not that it will be bad relative to other 50' cruisers but that it will be only ordinary compared to any other similar craft. The basic layout has been used for quite a while for boats from moderate size up to world circumnavigators.

    I totally agree that the described tests show nothing revolutionary or even novel.

    Waiting on further revelations.

    I don't care if it gets 100 mpg, not buying it, get ride of the extra hulls and add a sail you can get unlimited MPG

    For the naysayers, as well as anyone else, I'll be glad to answer any questions you have about the X-50 as the data becomes available. At least one naval architect and one million dollar yacht broker likes the design. That's all the encouragement I need right now.

    Is the X-50 going to have its limitations? Of course. All designs have limitations and all designs involve some kinds of trade offs. That goes with the territory. I like to think that the X-50 optimizes the choice between useable space and efficiency. But it all depends on how much efficiency you want and how much space you are willing to give up.

    Will its efficiency decrease when its fully laden and traveling at a higher speed. Of course. I'm not claiming that I have defied the laws of physics here. Only that my design is very efficient, relatively speaking.

    I also expect the boat to be relatively bouncy and responsive in heavy seas. I kinda like a light and bouncy boat, but this is personal preference.

    Will let you guys know more as the data becomes available.

    For the while, no claims of efficiency are possible as any good displacement hulls needs a ridiculous low amount of power to get around 5 knots. If the hull is rather slim the amount of power is even lower. A 6.3 metric tons 60 feet very slim trimaran (17/1 ratio) can be moved at 1/2 to 1 knot with a rear paddle (power estimated about 1/4 HP...). A 15 tons river boat can be moved at 2 knots by a walking horse (about 3/4 HP). At these speeds there is practically only friction...
    If the boat is very long (300 meters) you can move 300000 metric tons at 20 knots (37 km/h) with less than 100000 HP. Itś only ONE HP for 3000 Kg. Imagine your SUV with just 1 HP, 1/3 of the power of a 50cc moped...Mega cargos are very efficient. Size matters in that case.
    So I'm impatient to know the results of systematic trials at full displacement in several sea conditions. You'll probably get rather good results like with any slim hull at moderate speeds but do not expect something outstanding. Physics are stubborn, specially with displacement hulls.

    So, that tells me you sold it on EBAY, what did you get for it?

    No one on earth will give 100% down for one year waiting.
    Its quite frightening. No way to recoup the money in case the guy spend It all and don't delivers.
