    Hello,

I am a new comer to this website. I came across it in one of my searches for information on yachtdesign. First, I would like to introduce myself and give a little background. Finally, I would like to ask some questions for some directions in search of my future knowledge.

I am a recent December 2002, University of Pittsburgh graduate. I majored in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics also developing interest and background in physics and computer drafting. I am still in search of a job  wondering if I will ever get one, so if any of you have any suggestions on where I can use my skills of drafting within the boating industry I would love them.

I have been sailing ever since I was about 7 years old. I am a bit rusty since I haven't been on water in a little over 4 years. However, during my time off I have done countless reading on the sailing in general and more technical growth. About 2 years ago I decided I wanted to become a yacht designer and looked at schools for becoming one. I found that The Landing School would offer me the best education for my learning style. I do not plan to go up to Maine for another couple of years until I get myself at least somewhat financially stable. Which brings me to the second half of my discussion which is to ask some questions.

I've decided that I would like to continue my thirst knowledge about yacht design. I started by reading Understanding Boat Design by Ted Brewer, however, while reading the book I became rather confused by some of the terms and diagrams were hardly readable. I would like all suggestions to how you would suggest I approach continuing my quest for knowledge about yacht design before I leave and attend The Landing School.

Another question I have is one regarding boatbuilding or something along those lines. I have often thought that building a boat would help me understand what some of the components of yacht design are all about. However, since I have been a starving student for the last 5 years and currently have no income I was wondering if there were other suggestions you may have. Also do you think a model would do the trick and if so would you suggest I build one or buy one and if that is the case which one?

Thank you for taking your time to read over my long introduction and helping me with my adventure.

    Joseph

Welcome to the forums Joseph, if you visit Teds site he has a Primer that explains all of the terms and how they relate. An absolute from the basics booK is "Cruising sailboat kinetics" (The art science and magic of cruising boat design) by Danny Green

    Anyway Teds primer: http://www.tedbrewer.com/yachtdesign.html

You can find similar pages at many designers sites.

Constructing a model would certainly be interesting for you -I have done it myself. Cardboard and Superglue !

    Have fun!
