It has always been an arm and roller switch.

    Mercruiser engine cutout switch

This switch has been a problem on my boat the last few years...trying to buy a replacement, I was told it has been discontinued and I needed to buy an entire new assembly (big bucks). Instead, I purchased a unit from someone who was parting out a boat; $20. This assembly used a waterproof button switch instead of the roller lever type, but was form & fit with the old mounting holes. The unit works (cuts out engine momentarily to allow gear changes) with my Morse shiftbox, but required some linkage adjustment (not complicated) with boat in water.
