Unfortunately it turned that way. One person can bring an otherwise fruitful discussion to an end by their bad manners and fanaticism.

No one said Christians are to blame, the article just opined about how "Believers" have a hard time accepting scientific facts.

Along with the Arctic permafrost melting and releasing huge amounts of methane is the possibility of rising ocean temperatures releasing even vaster amounts of methane when the methane hydrates trapped in the ocean floors melt. Along with the release of methane, which has 20 times the potency of carbon dioxide relating to greenhouse gasses, an increase of the acidity of the oceans is probable as is also a decrease of oxygen levels in the water. The increased acidity would be harmful to vast amounts of oceanic lifeforms while the decreased oxygen levels would create huge dead zones where nothing lives anyway. One other result could be that as the ice which holds the methane in place melts, the sea floor destabilizes with possible continental shelf submarine landslides causing massive tsunamis.

I think it is not to us to decide that, but the thread starter Gonzo.
If some members behave. it can still be a good thread.

Thanks. If everybody posts one thing at a time and is polite, this can be interesting. Scientific theories should withstand challenges.

You guys are an embarrassment to your first-grade teachers.

“Teacher, you can give us only one post per day to read (preferably less than 100 words long), and please, please, please don’t ask us to read the whole article (much less any related links)!”

It’s no wonder you are so stupid.
    Not much hope there...

as denieing human inflicted globalwarming results financially very rewarding, the ones that dont want to take the risk with the futures climate, and try to live a low emission lifestyle ,end up with a big disadvantage on the "freemarket economy"
but when its too late nothing can be done
as a mather of fact the last southpole expedition"mala espina" came to the conclusion that wth half the ice gone the thing is now so far that zero emission wouldnt stop it and we should actually breakdown co2 to assure a livable climate for the future

For every scientist doing research, there must be 9 journalists writing buzz word articles on climate change.

Does anyone have a theory for how humans can burn unlimited amounts of fuel and change the vegetation and not change the climate? :D

Oh dear... Been off-line for ten days [some bar-steward disconnected my power supply, so no interweb!], I've obviously missed an episode or two... But the literary 'fire-fights' are as active as ever I see... [with my Machiavellian circuits switched on, I revel in the downfall of nerds...].

    Good posts and bad posts.

Good posts inform and furnish us with the fodder of thought, are challenging and thus stimulating. They offer insight and incentive to learn, unless of course, one 'knows it all'...

Bad posts do the opposite... Perhaps one should review the Monty Python sketch entitled: 'Is This The Right Room For An Argument?'...

Though somewhat surprised, I can understand why Imaginary Number [Zero] posted his highly sardonic 'Standardized Bonehead Reply Form'; much of the posts are [to quote some of the aforementioned sketch...], merely 'connective series of statements intended to present an opposing point of view...', without necessarily involving any 'knowledge'. The 'Devil's Advocate' may also play a role in this. Some people just like to express nothing...

As I write, my brave Greenpeace colleagues are climbing a solid wall of glass ['The Shard' in London...], in order to convey to Shell Petroleum and the world that we MUST NOT exploit the Arctic. Irrespective of what the various implications may be environmentally, the point is that we must stop this '****'. In the same way you would intervene if it were your sister... [or father:D] at risk.

Bring in the facts: of a multitude of physical 'side effects' such as methane release[as correctly posted by other...], chemical changes leading to deoxygenation,, changes in salinity and thus density, which in turn affects the various major deep ocean currents ['The Atlantic Conveyor'] and surface currents ['The Gulf Stream'], reduction in the reflective coefficient ['The Albedo Effect'], etc... And I havn't even started on the effluent or disruption to a pristine ecosystem by heavy industrial operations... And the argument stands up for itself.

Modern Earth Sciences encompass an extremely dynamic range of processes and attempt to understand their interrelations. So Yes, sometimes the questions are harder than the answers...

Water seeks its own level. Think of this in both literal and figurative ways.
