Your first poly-tarp sail might disapoint you in the looks department but you will be pleased (if you build it right) with the performance of it. Plus, you wont have a lot of cash wrapped up in it. By the time you get tired hearing your wife gripe about how it looks, you might have enough money saved up to buy a pretty sail? Try to copy off of someone else's sail rig, measurements, reenforcements etc., and if you are handy at all you should have a suitable rig. As mentioned above, the important thing is to get sailing! Good luck, SKIFFMAN

I stumbled across a site about making sails from the many different types and weights of TY VEK. The house wrap stuff. Claims to be excellent. I have the site if needed.

A roll of Tyvek around this area costs close to $l00.00 because it's sold in 9' by 100' rolls which is handy for wrapping a new house frame with but slightly over-kill for a small boat sail kit. So, the smart thing to do is find a housebuilder & con him into selling you about 5 yards or so off of his roll. I tried this about 2 years ago & the guy GAVE me what was left on one of his rolls.....enough to make my Lateen sail for a 12 foot skiff.....and it worked swell except if was not fun to handle because of the rough texture of the weave. I still use that rig for testing new boats I build. Cant get much cheaper than that?
