This appears to be similar. Pretty neat, I hadn't heard of it before. But it isn't the low cost rust/ballast/battery I am looking for. It needs direct exposure to the sun, and rusty sails just aren't cool. And the rest-of-system costs will be hundreds to thousands of times as much as the rust, so don't get too excited.

How safe is hydrogen storage? How much volume needs to be stored to reconvert and get the energy of 10 gallons of diesel?

    Already done commonly.

As far as I know it's not a problem under no pressure, when generated on demand it is bubbled through a water trap to prevent flashback. When you pressurize it it becomes an explosion risk. The drawback with hydrogen is it takes up 5 x more volume compared with fuel. As far as I know there is a BMW in the US riding around on it, some experimental vehicle. Hydrogen burns very clean (no smoke) and at a very high temperature.

I'm not so sure about using this as a "battery" with rust though, but who knows.

Here's another Battery technology that seems interesting...

Phinergy's metal-air battery could eliminate EV range anxiety

Israel-based company Phinergy claims to have developed metal-air battery technology that promises to end the range anxiety associated with electric vehicles. The company’s battery currently consists of 50 aluminum plates, each providing energy for around 20 miles (32 km) of driving. This adds up to a total potential range of 1,000 miles (1,609 km), with stops required only every couple of hundred miles to refill the system with water.

Mercedes, BMW and other car manufacturers have been tinkering with hydrogen powered vehicles for at least 20 years, but have not developed a production vehicle yet as far as I know.

There are all kinds of ways to generate electricity from chemical reactions. Rust (iron oxide) is a new one on me but who knows? It is as common as air and water so it could be a very cheap way to produce power. But, in the meantime I'll keep my lead acid batteries.
