Briggs & Stratton 5 hp outboard

Well I'm not sure what 'structural' would be in this context.. Like it's not a covering purely for appearances sake, that's for sure... nor does it make up the strength of the thing, I suppose..... but without it there's no oil and with no oil there's no functioning engine....

Here's pics. The top part of the sump first.. The crack doesn't stop at the corner of the wall but doesn't go much further.

Then the bottom part of the sump. That'd be where the main leakage is, I guess and there seems to be a little network of cracks.



I was thinking of trying my hand at some of this aluminum brazing I've heard about......

 

yes I have some in the shed but not used it ..would need to be on the outside ..small V and I understand the trick is you do it twice..seen a video a while back...If you have a feel for metal is probably worth a shot..the sump is not under pressure ..slight vacuum so oil running out in use should not be a problem...

 

I fixed up the photo thing. I'll have a practice with this brazing and see how I go. I'm no kind of a metalworker, strictly a self-taught part-time backyarder.

I'd like to develop a feel for metal. As a kid and a young man I always shunned it, preferred wood, thought only of wood.

Now I learn more and more and begin to appreciate it a bit more....

 

Photos of the cracks look to me like manufacturing defects where the diecast process included some sludge or an area suffered from low packing pressure (cold mold, etc) during the injection stage of mfg. Epoxy with Aluminum powder filler should work on outside of case after agressive sanding to prep the surface since there's no internal pressure. Might try Aluminum solder --

I am still looking for help/ideas per my earlier post on adding generator to B&S. I would contact SpareParts direct but see no way. His post indicated belt drive -- I am asking how to mount a drive pully on the B&S shaft --

 

welding that casing will distort it to hell and never seal again.

Buying a new engine will be cheaper.

PS I don't think that crack is a crack and if it is it will only leak a little, and if it does its a B&S not a RR.

 

Try JB Weld.

 

Is JB weld a typical metal epoxy? I see on their site it seems to be a clear fluid like Araldite whereas the metal epoxies I'm used to using are like thin mud.

What temperatures will the sump reach? JB, for instance, limit use to less than 260 degrees Centigrade.

Very good to see they actually list marine 'motors and propellers' in the applications.

Looks like I should very definitely try a fix.

 

I managed to break the prop on my briggs, anyone know where I can get a new one?

have you used one of these propeller? any idea which one fits the B & S?

 

I understand there were two b and s props ..one plastic and one metal. If yours was metal it may be better to get a new blade welded on ...Its not the big scientific thing you might think.... just a good eye and an angle grinder with a bit of card cut to shape.

I assume you checked e bay and also put a post on iboats.com

 

Mine is a metal prop, I couldn't find anything on ebay. I've found some sites that sell the replacements I was just hoping to find one cheaper than $90.

 

B & S 5 Hp

I just bought one from a dude down in Bayou Vista, Tx, (just North of the Galveston Causway) Supposedly it's and 03 or an 04, I paid him $75 and he threw in the Motor stand. I gotta tell you, all I did was bought a new Prop, changed the Lower Unit Oil, Changed the Oil, A new Spark Plug, and that puppy runs like scalded Monkey, I love it, now I'll admit it's loud, but so is a lawnmower and for $75 bucks how could I possibility go wrong. And honestly the exhaust faces the stern so I can easily live with the noise. If you find one and it runs, hell I'd buy it if I were you. Who knows someday it might just be worth a small Fortune..........LOL

 

Yep I got one

It's either an 03 or an 04, and it runs like a top, now I just bought it about 3 weeks ago, and I love it. It's a little noisy but so what....I paid $75 for it and it has been one good investment.

 

the reason they sell cheap is because out of the water when reved they seem to miss ..this is not a problem its the rev limiter cutting in . If it does not do that then someone has pulled the plug. Fit it with a rev counter for best performance bending the prop to get the revs right..pipe on the exhaust will quieten it ...
