    Welcome to the forum.

You seem to be describing a few different issues. First was it started, but wasn't running right, making popping sounds. This could have be carburetor issues, timing issues, maybe a broken part or two, etc.

Then you trying to start it again, but now the starter isn't spinning the engine.

The first thing you should do is get a manual on the engine/drive assembly you own and go through the starting circuit tests. Popping sounds aren't generally good. The starter problem is usually related to a Bendex drive or alignment issue.

The first thing I would do is a static timing test, to make sure she hasn't jumped time, which can be very damaging to an engine and will produce popping sounds. Then I'd go through the usual, engine off adjustments, to insure a level playing field, before trying to start it up again. Of course this assumes some starter tests too, so it'll actually crank.

Pull the starter and bench test it.
