It's understandable why some wouldn't find this thread interesting. But it quite baffles me why someone who seldom makes a useful contribution to the topic of the thread would go out of their way to ask for the thread to be terminated. I've never seen such requests on other threads; why this one?

Clearly, if the topic was out of line for this forum the moderator would have shut it down long ago. Although there are not a large number of active participants on this thread, the number of views suggests that there are a fair number of regular readers. So again I wonder, why would someone who appears to be uninterested in the topic of AGW want the thread closed?

As the new chairman of a key House subcommittee on the environment, Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) will be one of the GOP's leading actors when it comes to the Environmental Protection Agency and the growing threats from climate change. So with his first hearing as chairman on tap for Wednesday, what does the freshman Republican—and end times novelist—think about anthropogenic global warming?

He's not sure.

In response to an inquiry from Mother Jones, Stewart's office emailed a statement suggesting that more study was needed before he could safely say whether—as 97 percent of scientists believe—humans are responsible for rising global temperatures. And even if they are, he explained, that doesn’t mean we should act:

The world's climate is changing. That has always been true. Our global climate is always in flux, and always will be. So while I accept that our climate is changing, I also understand that a great deal of research still needs to be accomplished to understand why, as well as to discover the impacts man might be having on that change.

Climate change is also an extraordinarily complicated discipline. Because of this, it is vital that we ensure that policy decisions are based upon sound science. Before we make any long-lasting policy decisions that could negatively affect our economy, we need to be certain that the science behind our decisions is sound…

GMA News | Manila 2nd most at risk from climate change among cities in 197 countries –study

Of the major urban centers in 197 countries included in a study, Manila was among seven cities that face the highest exposure to the adverse impacts of climate change, British-based Maplecroft consultancy risk revealed.

In its Climate Change Vulnerability Index 2013, Maplecroft identified Manila as a city facing ‘extreme risks’ from the onset of climate change. The Philippine capital jumped eight spots to second place this year from the previous study that placed Manila at 10th place.

Apart from Manila, the other cities which were identified as ‘extreme risk’ or facing the highest vulnerability to climate change were:

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Manila, Philippines

Bangkok, Thailand

Yangon, Myanmar

Jakarta, Indonesia

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Raw Story | Gov. Perry’s water board still won’t acknowledge climate change as Texas faces dire drought in 2013

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Two top environmental officials in the state of Texas told Raw Story this week that not only is the state ill-prepared to face a summer this year even hotter than the record-breaking drought of 2011, it has largely neglected to begin planning for the unprecedented drought conditions forecast for the next several decades by the U.S. government’s 2013 National Climate Assessment.

The situation is so dire that if fundamental changes are not made to how water is conserved in Texas, the clashing trends of climate change and population growth threaten to utterly strangle the Texas economy over the coming 20-30 years as water costs soar, and activists warn that Gov. Rick Perry (R) is doing nothing but making the problem worse.

“Because the folks on the Texas water board are appointed by Rick Perry, they tend to fall in line with what Rick Perry believes when it comes to climate change,” Alyssa Burgin, executive director of the Texas Drought Project, told Raw Story. “There are many people whose jobs are on the line when it comes to talking about climate change. A mention of it did appear in the most recent state water plan, but any discussion given to it was rudimentary and symbolic, as if they didn’t wish to be accused of being ignorant as scientists… Most of our reservoirs are already in dire need and we’ve not even begun the really hot months. Taken together, it’s going to look like the dust bowl of Oklahoma...”

The Press-Enterprise | LA utility vows to go coal-free

Los Angeles officials are expected to announce today, March 22, that the city will give up all coal-based sources of power generation in the next 12 years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions….

Eliminating reliance on coal power will reduce the utility’s carbon emissions by 59 percent and citywide emissions by 40 percent below 1990 levels. Los Angeles has already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 28 percent, more than any other U.S. city, according to a press release…

The Guardian | Why geoengineering has immediate appeal to China

The political dilemma over geoengineering – deliberate, large-scale intervention in the climate system designed to counter global warming or offset some of its effects – will perhaps be most acute in China. In December, the country listed geoengineering among its Earth science research priorities, in a marked shift in the international climate change landscape noticed by China specialists Kingsley Edney and Jonathan Symons.

On the one hand, China's rapid economic growth has seen a huge escalation in its greenhouse gas emissions, which on an annual basis overtook those of the United States five years ago. Sustained GDP growth provides China's Communist party with its only claim to legitimacy, its "mandate of heaven". China's efforts to constrain the growth of its emissions have been substantial, and certainly put to shame those of many developed nations.

Yet neither China's efforts nor those of other countries over the next two or three decades are likely to do much to slow the warming of the globe, nor halt the climate disruption that will follow. Global emissions have not been declining or even slowing. In fact, global emissions are accelerating. Even the World Bank, which for years has been criticised for promoting carbon-intensive development, now warns that we are on track for 4C of warming, which would change everything…

Yet as the world remains paralysed by the scale of the warming crisis, and watches while it becomes locked-in, the capacity to implement an emergency response will become ever-more attractive. And in a global emergency — a crippling drought, the Amazon ablaze, Greenland collapsing — the gaze becomes focussed on the urgent to the exclusion of all else, including the interests of other, less-powerful nations whose plight may be worsened if a major power decided to regulate the Earth's climate system…

Of all the greedy, lying ******** you discovered during the making of the film, who are the greediest, most prevaricating?

Christopher Monckton is the one that far and above makes a mockery of himself. Yet despite being debunked time and time again by the scientific community, any time anyone invites him to come and deliver his lies, he continues to show up.

In terms of money, it’s hard to beat the Koch brothers. Their influence is everywhere, with their base in oil, oil transportation, oil refining, large cattle ranches, textiles, fertilizers and on and on. Their power is undeniable.

A big question raised in the film is why the media continues to allow climate deniers equal time, when the science is clearly against them. “Doubt is way easier to sell” is a great line in the film.

Fox is far and away the extreme example. They’ll have a known holocaust denier debating a holocaust survivor. Or a tobacco industry representative still arguing that smoking isn’t linked to cancer.

The challenge is how do we get the media to stop presenting the issue as if it were a debate, when the debate is already over. I think it’s up to our lawmakers to make a hefty stand, especially the Republican Party. As long as they continue to publicly question the science of climate change, so will the media…

How some 50% of terrestrial vertebrates and an even larger share of marine life died off in the late Triassic period has become more clear from new research published online Thursday in the journal Science. The work lends greater validity to the theory that a massive volcanic event tore apart that continent and blanketed Earth's atmosphere, turning the ocean acidic and snuffing out animals that could not adapt. That geologic event, which created the Atlantic Ocean, ushered in the biggest biological shift in the planet's history…

Matching the fossil record in sedimentary rock with the dense basalt formed by the volcanic eruptions proved difficult, even with sophisticated tools of the 21st century. It was difficult to say whether the eruptions happened before the mass extinction…

There were several pulses that spewed millions of cubic miles of lava, each separated by tens of thousands of years, Blackburn said. The first of them was probably big enough to cause the extinction, and subsequent ones occurred as life began to recover and dinosaurs exploited the territory left empty by the mass die-off…

If there is a lesson for modern climate change, it is mixed. Doubling the amount of carbon in the atmosphere in 20,000 years or less — which scientists say occurred in the late Triassic — would be catastrophic to life on Earth, Olsen said. Industrialization is probably adding carbon to the atmosphere at a far more rapid pace.

"You're basically turning the ocean into soda pop," he said. "That's the problem we're facing now — turning the ocean acidic. Here we are, doing it in less time."

It may be too early to draw a parallel with modern times, however. Carbon in the atmosphere was far higher to begin with during the Triassic, Olsen noted.

"It would be a mistake to assume we're headed into a mass extinction," he said.
