How do I align the chianplates on my newly built wooden gaffer? Are there any formulas, or otherwise smart way to align the chainplates? This MUST be very relevant to every boatbuilder outthere!!!!

    Hi Lunde,
Well, I don't see anyone else jumping in here so......
If you are talking about the fore and aft alignment (related to vertical) and have a sailplan drawing I would suggest you just extend the line of the shrouds on the drawing with pencil as far as you can and then measure the angle with the sheer line at the deck with a bevel gauge as accurately as you can right on the drawing. It is likely a small scale drawing so take a measurement on BOTH the forward side and the after side of the shroud and average them. Then take the gauge to the appropriate spot on the sheer and using a reasonably long strait edge (or the chain plate itself) and draw a line on the hull planking for a guide. Repeat, of course, for each shroud. If you are within a degree or two you should be fine.
If this is not what you were looking for, then please clarify and somebody can try again.
    Best Wishes,
    Gilbert
