It sank for the same reason Costa Concordia sank. Human arrogance and overconfidence.
Exactly 100 yrs have passed between two disasters. Ships have (hopefully) evolved and are now better built and equipped, but human nature has not changed during that time period.

Kind of interesting when you compare the length of damage between the Titanic and Costa Concordia and the time till the boats became unsuable...but then again, the Concordia had a huge hole in her as opposed to unaccessable sprung strakes. Apples and oranges, but still people will want to compare.

I was actually not talking about any of what you said. Just about human factor and nature.
    Cheers

Oh, I concur...sorry I wasn't clear. Both sank because the operators put holes in the people tank. Just commenting on the relative size of the holes as being apples and oranges.

The tension in the rigging was enough to snap it like a carrot.

Howard's "One Australia" did 'sink' his chances at the election at that time, a policy in favour of assimilation rather than multi-culturalism, probably didn't play too well with a lot of minorites.

If you remember Young america did the same thing and it wasnt the rigging tension so much but the way it was built and where major structures stopped abruptly in one place instead of being stepped out to carry the loads over a longer area. We had the boat sitting in our workshop till they cut it feathered and rejoined a whole new mid section into it and took it sailing again . but this time with all the modifications done !! . The layers of unidirectional carbon you could see through there were small hairline gaps in places . I have samples sitting in a box still that came from that boat !!!:D

Was just poorly built !! has not happened again because the boats have changed significantly in design specially the inside what you cant and may :pnever ever see .

I have heard had the Titanic not made any attempt to avoit impact and hit iceberg head on it would have stayed afloat with bow smashed and only one or two compartments flooded and would be able to reach New York by going in reverse. The same probably applies also to Costa Concordia.

    Probably.

    I heard that too.

I also heard that it's okay to put the autopilot on and go for dinner.

So long as you don't swerve and just hit stuff head-on your fine.

    Mik,

Why the sudden interest in the TITANIC?

Did you watch the recent doc on it or something?

There are lots of threads full of speculation if you have a quick search for them.
