Quick, Easy 3-Man Canoe Plans

    Petros,

    If the outriggers were at water level they'd plane as long as the mono was level, even at full stop!

    We have four hours to build in. The build is not a race. All we have to do is be finished within

    four hours. A good plan with templates etc will make the build much easier and faster.

    We will have trials as part of our sponsorship.

    So, we'd like to determine a fast hull and THEN see if we can build it within a

    reasonable time frame.

    Have some old pics from a Kelsall workshop on my hard disc. Hope this will help. For the bow you need a long big wedge to cut out. The stern needs two wedges, one for each side. If you want a flat stern, please let me know.

    Thank you Manfred.

    I may just be the stupidest guy in the world.

    I just can't get it to work even out of paper and round bottles to form it over.

    For it to work, I would have to engineer many slits and then fuse them with white glue,

    minimal fasteners and no drying time to speak of.

    This idea has concluded.

    What I am now considering is widening the beam and shallowing the draft.

    The hull would turn (yaw) easier and at 24', we can afford a 16" beam (vs 12").

    The only way I can see making the half round work is by cutting a flat curve of deadrise up the

    bow and stern and sheathing it in flat like a barge.

    Plus, I'd be dealing with two butt joints where the 8' ply sheets meet.

    This is a fun thread and all of we wizards mean to have Tom in the victory circle. However!.... I believe that we are overthinking this design confab.

    OK one of you wizards set up a spread sheet that compares ....say 6 mph vs 7mph boats. or something like those numbers. You have three sprint sections of perhaps 85 yards with two turning marks that might use 20 more or less yards. Now how much does a sprint speed advantage compare to better or lesser times around the turns? Among the most salient design points is that the boat is stable enough to be manageable and does not conspire to dump its' valiant paddlers.

    A build in four hours suggests that all that carefully thought out wetted surface would like to be finished and nicely faired.. In four hours? Forget it. That nasty plywoood is going to produce debilitating surface friction. Spend some brain power on contriving a way to smooth the wetted surface. Well the first brain fart is to put a diaper on the boat made of visqueen and held tightly in place with lots of duct tape. Wet plywood will begin to check within a New York instant,

    Carry on getlemen, this is important stuff we are dealing with. Tom and his crew has gotta win this contest or we will all have to hang our heads in shame.

    I considered paint. All that's going to dry quickly is spray and at $8 a can, I don't think it's in the budget.

    The grain runs fore and aft so that's a plus!

    Pretty sure I'm going to use the 1/8"(3 mm) door skin which is not a plywood.

    Staples from a staple gun and white glue, way better!

    It's much lighter, cheaper and breakable!

    I haven't fondled and flexed it yet to see if it's appropriate for the job.

    Othewise, it's looking like 3/8" ugly board.

    Absolutely bomb proof but hideous in every other sense.

    It's boiling down to the $100 budget now.

    Its too bad you can't use any power tools or you could shrink, rather than tape, the sheet poly onto the hull with a heat gun, smoothing the ply and waterproofing the wetted surface at the same time. A few minutes work is all it would take.

    I have sponsored a Quick & Dirty Boat Building Competition for the local maritime festival for 9 years. Contestants are given (4) sheets of 1/4" plywood, (6) 8 ft 2"x4"s, 100 screws, 50 tie-wraps, 2 tubes of quick drying caulk and a "mystery material". They can spend about $50 on their own supplies. The have 6 hours to build the boats and then race them after about 1.5 hours of drying time. I have seen everything from bicycle powered trimarans to skin on frame kayaks built. The most consistantly fast boats are simple pirogue or narrow dory types. Some people don't consider stability and make them too narrow resulting in capsizes.

    If it's on YouTube, I've already seen it.

    These things are very rule specific and about doing the most with what you have.

    Also, very course and crew specific.

    So, at this point your race is of no help to me.
