Rigg, Leeboards and sculling oar

I have been playing around with this design and wondered if it would be possible to add a simple rig for roll dampening and backup in case the engine brakes down?

Where should the leeboards be positioned?

Would it be possible to steer with a sculling oar, or is that just stupid?

What you have drawn will work as a power boat. It is not likely to sail very well because of the bottom configuration but it could move along at a slow pace with a sail. The sail that you have drawn is too small to provide sufficent power.

Position of the leeboards depends on the location and dimensions of the sail and to some extent the lateral area of the immersed hull. You will need some detailed help with this project.

Yes you can steer with a large sweep oar but it would become tiresome after a while.

Give us more details about the boat. Is it to be a planing boat or a displacement type? What kind of power will you use, inboard or outboard? How much power? Estimated weight of boat and contents including passenger, fuel, water, batteries, provisions, etc. Intended use of the boat? Where will the boat be used and what kind of weather and water conditions would you anticipate?

Right now we own a 33 ft motorsailer made entirely out of mahogany and sometimes I feel it is to much maintainance. I would like to build a smaller boat, that still meets our needs.

It is a displacement boat and I plan to use the most powerful Minn kota with I-pilot. We are happy to do no more than 2-3 knots. We intend to use it to go short distances (1-3 nm) between the islands in the archipelago and in no more than 5 m/s. The archipelago is very shallow in some places, and therefore the shallow draft. We will have access to charging the batteries every 5-15 nm. The boat will have a snappy roll and a steadying sail would be nice. I do not want the rigg too big, as to be able to tip the boat over. What would be the easiest rigg to build and handle? It is ok if the boat only makes 2 knots under sail. The discplacement would be around 3.800 pounds fully equiped.

 

You have come to an advantageous place to post your questions. We have numerous very credentialed boat designers here. All of them are most generous with their counsel. My suggestion is that you contact some of them for professional guidance. Several of those gentlemen have stock plans for all manner of boats, Some of those stock plans will surely fit your needs. The professionals here do not openly advertise on this forum.

Contact Par, or Eric Sponberg for starters. They are easy to find on the forum members list. There are numerous others such as Guillermo or Ad Hoc who, though thoroughly competant and experienced, tend to specialize in larger boats and ships. I am sure that inquiries will cost nothing and be the absolute best option for you. Self designs have a very high incidence of failure. Given the modest cost of professional designs and the personal counsel of the designer, a do it yourself design is almost never a bargain.
