    pistnbroke I try

No No No ...the plastic shroud is just the three bolts you can see in the plastic...take that off and you have the standard B and S metal cooling cowl...that is bolted around the lower edge.....take that off its not attached to anything just lifts off ..

Why look on the web I have the paper manual no loger available ..send me your e mail address via PM and I will photograph it and send it to you. You also need a rev counter so you can bend the prop to give the right RPM... if you run it out of water it will miss like crazy ..this is normal its the rev limiter cutting in at 4000 rpm ,,not a fault.

Will not start in F or R as you cannot spin it fast enough to work the de compressor ..( keeps the exhaust valve open below 100 rpm)

A de compressor on 5 HP !!!! de compressors are for diesel.

You can rope start 150 HP outboards

What good is keeping the valve open when your trying to start it.

Why not take the spark plug out--- that will reduce compression

Im pretty sure you would have a better chance of starting it with the valves closing properly

Even little chain saws have decompression buttons which can help prevent wrist twisting and can verify that as fact.

I've got one of these 5hp 4stroke and no experience with them or anything like it.

Being air cooled I suppose I can run it on a test bench in neutral without needing to have any water to sit it in?

Only if you have air on or around your bench.

De comprssors only release the first compression to assist in the initial rotation over the first otto cycle.

It does not stay on over the entire cranking cycle or it wont start,---will it?

    That's what I thought.

But their manual says not to do it in one of the 'warning' boxes and damned plain and obvious though it seems to be to me that it could be used out of the water it wouldn't be the first time something obviously so to me turned out not to be so....

You don't know what you don't know....

    Thanks for your input.

Workshops repairing motorcycles needing to run the bike use a house hold domestic fan placed at the front of it simulating riding. A similar approach would work for you.

I was recently using a Honda 4 stroke, air cooled, 2HP outboard. Worked well.

I am interested in add-ons for the 5HP B&S outboard. From posts I think I can figure out how to add exhaust pipe to direct the exhaust underwater and will probably add some muffler baffles and packing as well similar to custom mufflers for motorcycles. I was really intrigued to read the early post by SpareParts per his addition of an alternator -- I would appreciate any help or ideas along this line. I assume SpareParts is driving his alternator by a vee belt -- but I would like ideas as to how and/or where to mount the drive pulley to the motor shaft. I know of some outboards which have a "drive cup" mounted above the pull rope mechanism for emergency use of a separate rope if the installed one breaks. Does the B&S have something like this (others are mounted by a hex nut on end of the driveshaft -- just remove this cup and install a drive pully under the nut -- I realize pully would have to have a thin center section instead of a heavy collar) -- but I don't know if the B&S could accomodate a similar arrangement -- any ideas??

wel lhe did not mean he fitted a car alternator as that would consume all the 5 hp of your engine. due to the single pair of magnets on the outside of the flywheel its not possible to use them for a generator ( tried it ) but there are some generators that fit around the shaft ..spinning magnets and fixed coils but not seen one on a B/S ...have seen a bike dynamo running against the flywheel.........

Got a new problem now. Turns out the cast aluminum case or engine shell or whatever you should call it is cracked.

Guess that's about the finish of that, then.

depends where its cracked if its not sturctural then just clean it up and fill with bathroom silicon its good to 300 deg ..other owners will be interested in it for parts ......now wait for frosty ....
