Hello Harley fans - just got back from a week long camping/snorkleing/ drinkingboating trip in the keys and biscayne bay on the old Harley 1988 superstar....had a great time but as is typical with boating in an old project boat that has recently been repowered there were some technical issues....didnt break the blender or morale so we still had fun!

Genny would only run 20 minutes at a time due to a failed fuel pump...dohhhhh

Boat would barely plane and topped out at 22 mph per gps....lousy....but in her defense the props need to be tuned to her now 330 hp 454 motors and my trim tabs are still not working. We knew we were a glorified trawler but went anyway( I downsized engines on the cheap when 502s kept puking).

Here is weird one for you Harley Owners - day 4 we are heading in for fuel at 8 knots when low and behold I lost all steering...???? Quick dive in the water after checking power steering pump and looking for broken hoses in the engine room and what do I find? .... the steering RAM has unscrewed itself from the knuckle that connects it to the arneson drives....WTF? Apparently the little nut that is supposed to keep the RAM from unscrewing was missing. It took some very long wrenches, bloody knuckles, and lots of holding my breath under water to get it back together to get us home but....we made it.

Fellow Arneson boys and girls - go check your boats...dont let this happen to you....we were lucky it happened in the middle of the Biscayne Bay south of Miami with no-one and no expensive boats to hit around us.

Now all I need is a new Genny Pump and to get my props tuned and I should be okay for a while.

Sounds like a blast Oliver. (The drinking, boating and snorkeling stuff. Not the steering fix. What a drag!)

The wife and I will be down again the last week of Feb and were thinking about spending a day or two in the Keys. Got any reccomendations?

We hung out mostly on biscayne bay since the water was a bit too cold for snorkleing - we like Pennicamp and Marathon area the most. Key west is bit much for us fuel-wise and environment is not our style when boating.

Give us ring when you are down - let's grab a beer or something.

Sure. Can do Oliver. I'll give you a call around the middle of the week, say Feb 26th or 27th. Looking forward to it.

Hoping to get accepted into the Club

Hey guys. I think I've read through all of this thread. Very cool stuff. I have a 27' Harley Center console with a single outboard. But more relative, I'm closing in on a three year project of rebuilding a 42 Wellcraft Excaliber. Stripped to bare hull, new transom, topsides, deck, pilothouse, power, the works. In the process I converted to fixed surface drive. I know I'll never be one of the Harley guys, but maybe like an adoptive family member? I actually purchased a pair of shafts off of a diesel shop in Delaware, and apparently they came off of a 42 Harley. So it is my guess that it could be from one of your guys' boat that was converted to Arnesons? There aren't any stock surface piercing Welcrafts so I feel more closely related to you guys now. Thanks for all the information you guys have posted, its has been really helpful in encouraging me to keep with the project.
