Approved heat protection coating

    Have got a question from a client and I have no answer:

    Is there a heat protection coating (like a paint) that is approved (DNV, Lloyds etc) for engine room in an aluminium vessel (abt 15 m work boat)? I believe there is an A30requirement, but have to check that point.

    The painting, by itself, will never provide fire protection, class "A" nor any other class. Structural strength is required, and painting, obviously, can not supply.
    Sorry if I misunderstood the question.

    The military doesn't have to follow any rules, but I know here in the US they are starting to use intumescent coatings that expand when exposed to fire and provide some passive fire protection. This is one I found first:

    A30 or A60 ratings have to provide protection for 30 or 60 minutes, a TALL order for just paint. I have never seen one with an A rating, and if there is, it is probably an intumescent coating which have their own issues.

    Sorry if I was vague, it's not a question of fire-retardant coating, but a thermal barrier/insulation.

    I dont know the regulations for marine applications .

    Intumescent paints swell when heated , increasing film thickness ...... insulating the substrate.
