And that sort of takes us back to where I started. Is that GFI on the dock adequate when there is no other AC wiring aboard? I'm thinking that it probably is but could be a bit better if there was another GFI between the boat plug-in and the battery charger. I'll likely take my chances and rely on the shore power GFI.

FWIW when I am inspecting vessels on the hard using an adapater connected to a 15 amp GFCI outlet to to furnish power while recommissioning the pedestal GFCI always trips when I use the button on my three light tester not the GFCI on board. You wouldn't be wrong to rely on a GFCI where you plug in just test it before you bet on it.

I didn't see the answer in other posts so just in case it wasn't already stated GFCI outlets in the US trip at 5 milliamps. Ones I have investigated do not need a green ground to trip. The three light tester I use won't check a GFCI that is installed in an ungrounded system since it uses the green ground to create the current imbalance that trips the GFCI.

'Juice' is juice. Some can tolerate it, some cannot.

'Ground' does not need a metal box. The metal box merely takes the ground from inside and places it outside. If it is a 'plastic' box, the ground merely goes to the 3-wire cord.

'GFCI' .... Great. But, if you are never in the circuit, it does not matter. You must be in the loop (circuit) for electricity to bite you. If you get yourself into the loop, even with GFCI, electricity hurts. The felt pain depends upon your resistance (literally) and your tolerance for pain.

You need an 'electrician' to figure out your needs. Have one come out and check your wiring. $75? It would cost you almost that much to buy the proper gear to check it yourself. Unless you are good with a screwdriver with light bulb in it ....

If you do not get yourself in the circuit. Yes.

If you get in the circuit? You will feel something. Hopefully, just a tingle.

One GFI that works is always better than 2 which do not work ....

They sometimes do NOT work. I could place one of those 'made in china' comments here, but made in USA should be checked as well ....

I always protect myself from an electric shock by jumping in the air when I pull a plug out.
