Yipster, can you please identify the missing file which causes your error ?
It is useless to look for anything more if the installation has failed on your system.

    Sistre MAAT Hydro

I installed right now the 7.1 version on a W7 PC without any problem.
Of course you have to run setup being the Administrator as per all the software on the W7 platform.
The software ask the license key but then you should proceed without considering it in demo.
Once installed load the canot in the demo files directory and study the manual!

Your installation problem probably resulted from the fact that the french translation of the End User License Agreement couldn't display properly because the french character set is not installed on your system.

Please, notice that latest Rev. 7.2 can now be downloaded on the french installation page (available in september on the english page). Manuals and tutorials can be directly accessed from the Help menu in this new version, and a new 'Deterministic Stability' function is available for automated damage stability calculations.

Don't hesitate to express your wishes, critics or ask further questions on MAAT Hydro's FAQ if necessary !

About Rhino, do you people use it "standalone" or with the "ORCA3D" advertized as additonal module on rhino site for marine design ? (and which is more expensive than Rhino itself)

Almost total beginner here for 3D modeling (except sketchup a bit) but would like to "mess around" with some ideas on a trimaran or monohull. And ideas more or as much related to internal and deck architecture of the boat than hull design.

MAAT Hydro is a registered Rhino 3D companion (see http://www.rhino3d.com/resources/display.asp?language=fr&listing=4983 ) used by many professionals, schools and universities and currently operates on Rhino's IGES exports (3dm files should become readable this winter) without any extra software.

Its free demo version can be downloaded on http://www.sistre.eu and provides real time hydrostatic analysis, upright analysis and intact stability (1 compartment / basic criterion) operating directly on the imported surfaces / solids (hull sections are therefore no longer necessary).

It is already appreciated by numerous students and home users and, whenever necessary, a complete range of professional calculation reports can also be calculated thanks to its flexible and affordable 'à la carte' licenses'.

Thanks to its newest 3D solid approach, it allows calculating monohulls as well as multihulls or any kind of composite floating object without limitation.

Thanks a lot for the info, will look into that, although at this point the ideas are related more to "what is feasible" in terms of interior and deck plan for an "overall shape" than detailed hull analysis, is there an easy way with MAAT hydro to simulate interior and deck arrangement ? (maybe using tanks as basic volumes)

Note : Nous nous sommes rencontrés (avec Pierrick quand vous étiez à Boulogne) une fois à l'époque où je construisais des planches à voile à l'x , bien le bonjour à vous et à lui !

The companies I am familiar with do not use the Orca plugin (or the previous incarnation - RhinoMarine) for hull modeling. This is at bigger companies designing large yachts and commercial ships. I think the Orca plugins would be very good to have for small independent naval architects that are only doing preliminary design or not working on projects that require damage stability.

Hull modeling and fairing can be accomplished within Rhino without plugins. Having Orca will not help with sketching out your interior layout ideas.

what would you buy for $3000, for a small business?

For starting a small naval architecture business, mainly stability and equipment additions rather than hull design, what would you buy for about $3000? I am using Solidworks with FEA now and it is good for parts/assemblies, but can not do stability.

    thanks,

MAAT Hydro allows 'marinizing' most of the 3D modellers like SolidWorks, Rhino, CATIA, etc... as soon as hull's geometry can be exported as BREP solids / trimmed NURBS in an IGES file.

Its free demo version provides visual real-time hydrostatic analysis, upright hydrostatic analysis and intact stability (1 compartment / basic criterion).

The higher level functions, like probabilistic or deterministic damage stability, intermediate flooding stages, max steady wind angles etc..., are also almost fully available in the free demo version, a 'For Demo Only / No Commercial Use" label being simply overprinted on the reports.

MAAT Hydro can therefore be used as a free hydrostatic analysis companion of your favourite 3D modeller as long as necessary (may fulfill most of your design needs), short or long term licenses being purchasable online as soon as the final reports have to be produced (starts from 1 month ~ 100 €)...

Don't hesitate to get more information on www.sistre.eu !

    jeffking:

For a small company on a budget, Rhino offers some advantages. The purchase price is low and it has an accurate, although limited, hydrostatics analysis capability. You have a couple of options available if you would like to extend its capability. Many of Rhino's program functions are exposed to script writers, making it fairly easy to write your own custom stability script. Another option would be to purchase a stability plug-in. Just go to the Rhino web site and use the plug-in link at the bottom of their home page. Orca3D is probably the most popular of the stability plug-ins. It is also the most expensive, but I believe you could purchase it and Rhino and still be within your budget.

Another Rhino advantage for a business like yours is that Rhino is very popular within the marine community which means that your clients will probably be able to support a Rhino model file, eliminating a file translating process.

The choice of the hydrostatic solver depends on its target use: Design only or approval by classification societies.
