Buccaneer 24 Trimaran

This is very good news, please keep us all as up to date as you can.

 

Its good to see a boat brought back to life. Be very careful if you try to sand while the wood is wet, you could take off the top lamination. Wet wood tends to shred in long fibers versus sand.

I would not sand anything on it until it is dry. When dry, the loose paint will usually peel up and can be removed with a light scrapping, and if it is still stuck, then so is the epoxy under it and just leave it alone.
I would try to determine what sort of plywood the boat is built of. Go ahead and cut out one of the damaged sections and examine it for type, thickness and plies. If it is good marine grade ply and mostly void free, the boat should dry out with very little lasting damage. If you can ventilate it with a fan it shouldn't take but six weeks or so to get mostly dry to where you can start repairs. Indoors and warm would be even better, but do as you can. B

won't it dry faster or dry better when you try to scrape the paint. There are now many bubbles in the paint ant at some point when pressure is applied water flows from between the hull and epoxy primer....

Yes, paint removal will help if the paint is already bubbling, but be VERY careful, it is easy to do far more harm than good. If you are cutting in to any raw wood, stop and let nature do the work. In just a few weeks, the paint will fall off on its own. Was the boat in salt or fresh water? B

 

boat was in fresh water. At some spots you will peel off the top layer off the wood and glass, so we have to be carefull....

It has been a pretty good year for the "antique" Buc I have a few more of these to collect. B

I have to arrange a trailer, and a spot nearby to restore. First there is still mud inside. I have to flush the boat to get it all out. Then sand it completely to let the boat dry out. So still a bit of planning to do.

Hughes says on his website that his 24' trimaran weights 431kg and has displacement of 914kg. What's the difference?

And my second question: Buccaneer weighs about 800 kg (correct me if I'm wrong), where does this big difference come from?

This is a Buc forum, I don't know what a Hughes weighs
Many "designers" and boat builders are pretty "loose" with their weights, and unless you can weigh an actual boat, I would not trust any weight specs you read. With a home built boat, expect even less accuracy as there are a lot of variables. The displacement figure is a little more realistic, as it is usually taken to be the actual loaded design weight of boat, equipment and crew. Maybe.
I think a real world Buc 24 ready to sail, but without crew or "supplies", is in the 1400 to 1600lbs range, going by the waterlines I have seen (mostly in pictures). It is possible to build one lighter, but it takes skill and good materials. I think Crowther expected the 24 with a crew and equipment to be around 2000 lbs, I know it starts to feel overloaded around 2200 lbs. I do think that the Buc 24 is one of the lightest tris you can build in wood around its size, and although they are lightly built, quite a few are still sailing after 40 years
