    Hi guys (and gals?),

Newbie here so please take it easy on the torture! ;)

I'm a mech.engineer with my own company and now retired. My biggest design/build projects were designing and building 800 ton presses. A few decades back, I spend a little while on a cargo ship going around the islands. Throughout the years since, the closest I got to water was....in the shower.

I never lost my fascination with design of ships and now, with way too much time on my hands, my interest has been reviving.

    Anywho....

What I'm looking for is drawing on/about 10,000 dwt cargo ships. I have ga's by the bucket load but what I don't have is technical drawings (assembly drawings? I'm not sure what the terms are in shipbuilding.). I'm curious as to what the steel specs are, thicknesses, strut spacing, etc. Ship design like Groots have caught my attention and love to see how they are built.

This is nothing more then a fascination and fueled and exercised by my background...also know as a hobby! LOL! If there are any engineers here who work for the shipbuilders who are concerned, I am willing/ready/able to agree to a confidentiality agreement off line.

I have also scoured the net and I have found plenty of general arrangements but no details. Is there a site that I missed?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

If what you want are details of the structure of the ship, I think I can help. Check my gallery, give you an idea of some of the things I do.

I have no input on the topic BUT found "non confidentiality agreement" to be funny. Is it the opposite of non disclosure agreement?

    *drools*

Yup, drawings like your cargo hull structure is what I'm looking for......for the entire ship. Things like, are the front hull plates thicker then the side plates? Bow design for ice conditions different? Propeller shaft mounting? Engine mount load spreads? And other details that only a sad mind would wonder about.....

Some people dream about sex. Some people dream about playing for the Yankees. Me? I design machines in my dreams.

    Are you in the field?

I will create an e-mail account and get in contact.

Are we the only two interested in this?

This is an interesting site but as dry as can be.

You might go burrowing through the German Lloyds specification, it is available on-line for free down load. It gives detailed specifications for all kinds of different size ships, their useage and recommened skin thickness, frame spacing, etc. and alternatives for designs by analysis rather than by perscritive tables. It covers a lot of different details of ship design, it will get you what you are looking for, and if you are so inclinded can even design your own hull if want.

like any regulatory document, is it pretty unweildy to use, with lots of cross referances to other sections, but it is a complete document with everything you need.

I will check that out. My intent was to have some 'fun' by going through some blueprints and then asking myself why it was done that way. Approaching it from the other direction is dry and tedious. I was going through the other source I quoted above and while interesting to some degree, I got tired of it by the third article.

I'm building this fantasy ship in my head. I can visualize designs but my brain goes into reboot and sleep mode with formulas.

Again though, thank you for the lead. It will shortcut a lot of the 'why' from a very sound source.

With all due respect to what he says Petros, and agreeing with him that in the rules of the classification societies are a lot of information, do not recommend at all to go that way. If there is a specific topic you want to know, perhaps an expert in these regulations could indicate the specific chapter or paragraph, you should read. I can assure you that just try to find a topic, it's quite complicated. And surely will interest more figures that may appear, that the texts themselves.
