Ted Warren new Ultralight 20 trimaran

    Ted mentions a few posts up that the boat is designed to be able to fly the main hull.

    That was moderate winds, 11kts gusting a bit higher. Most of the time when we had wind we were going above 16 kts, at about 1:00 we are 16.1 on the GPS.

    The UL20 tri sails on one hull most of the time, from very light to moderate winds. As the wind gets stronger you can move crew weigh around to get whatever weight distribution you want. The freeboard on the main hull is the same per unit of length as most of my other designs. It's always a trade-off, freeboard really hurts you in windage, but is nice in steep chop. The amas are designed to fly the boat and the beams are very stiff to support this. If that's your cup of tea I'd order the racing rig with the three rudder option. The ama rudders actually mount on the tiller shafts and are a relatively cheap option. The
    boat as configured in the video with myself and my wife, Barbara, on board has a Bruce Number of 2.0. With the taller rig we would be 2.2-2.3.

    Another video uploaded by Ted, shows the boat in more detail and on the car roofrack. In Australia you would probably need a larger car or trailer as the overhangs would be too much for our regulations (in Victoria at least not sure about the other states).

    You must have gotten the same e-mail I did? I decided to wait and get their permission before I posted it. Ha! I was hoping this would be the one with foils and flying the main hull-I was wrong.....
    Just got an e-mail from Zac and he said they'll be trying foils next year. He also said he'll have pictures of the boat flying the main hull before long. Cool!

    I don't think I like boomless or the main with slugs at each batten.
    Somewhat surprised at the lack of depth on the lee ama when traveling that fast.
    Anyone know what wind speed the main hull is supposed to fly?
    Seemed like a nice smooth ride.

    I do wish this wasn't a take apart boat for trailering (or cartop). Even though that would mean heavier.

    I'm looking forward to seeing the "R" version hopefully they will have some sailing footage when one is constructed. I could see that being a brilliant little singlehanded rocket.

    The UL20 develops a very large amount of specific righting moment for it's sail area. These conditions were not enough to get even close to the max righting moment. The amas submerged develop just under 1000 lbs of displacement, more than enough to fly boat and crew. When a multi is up on one hull, that's it for power. The UL20 can generate much more power than in this video. In fact the boat is really sailing for all intents on one hull all of the time, the main hull. It's a different paradigm and much easier to handle.
    The UL20 is a very simple boat optimized for speed and ease of getting to its potential. It's much faster than any beach cat that I know of. The boat in the video weighs 181 lbs, with two crew of about 160 lbs each. We have bashed it into large steep wake in Salem Sound and could not detect any loss of speed. It gets wet, but not on the windward ama. We also did some single handing of the UL20 after the video session.
    The mast height to boat width ratio is 1.7. Most performance beach cats are around 3 to 4. The product concept is performance with safety. Although the died-in-the-wool small multi racers all talk about flying on one hull, our actual customers would like better than beachcat performance without the white knuckles. We hear this over and over again.

    No "C" foils for me but I'll take a daggerboard T-foil and a couple of retractable UptiP ama foils...

    I thought C foils were the lifting curved foil assist, and that was what you wanted. I guess the criteria changed. C foils sound just as nice to me, good for foil assist just like the big trimarans.

    "C" foils are fine for foil assist but I'm interested in flying the whole boat especially now that I know what works.......
