Van: nice Moggie! Saw the MD plate - I hear they are building them again: wonder where they get the engines. A friend of mine used to have a BSA trike, not many of them left, we had to keep oiling the valves every hour or so, but advanced enough to have front-wheel drive. Also reported to have electric start but our one didn't - or it had stopped working. The final transmission element was a worm drive but efficient enough that the car could be push-started, which was my job.

    Mammoth Cave Entrance

All the saltpeter for the USA during the War of 1812 came from this cave. The hollowed logs provided the transport mechanism for the mined bat guano from which the saltpeter was extracted. It was then sent to Philadelphia by oxcart. We won.

No we didn't.... at best we can claim it was a draw. We started out expecting to take Canada -- and at the end of the war we were lucky to get Maine and Michigan back in the Treaty of Ghent, which restored all the pre-war boundaries.

I'm not claiming the desire for Canada was the root of the war, although it was definitely on the minds of some pro-war advocates. The high-handed actions of the Royal Navy, which not only violated the rights of our neutral vessels but impressed seamen off them, were the primary catalyst.

Thanks for the pictures and the information about the cave, though. Fascinating stuff. During the Civil War, the Confederacy was so desperate for saltpetre that the following ad appeared in the Selma Morning Reporter of 1863: “The ladies of Selma are respectfully requested to preserve all their chamber lye collected about their premises for the purpose of making Nitre.” Carts were sent out to collect barrels of lye and the Selma nitre works provided gunpowder to the Confederacy for the last two years of the war.

They are great pictures. We won the 1812 war because our Capitol is in Washington and not London.

The War of 1812 wasn't an attempt by the British to re-conquer us, so your claim doesn't really make sense. Besides, would you say the Germans won WW2, because their capital is still in Berlin?

We actually did very well in the peace, by the way.

A friend of mine has a BSA trike. Hotchkiss twin, oil the rockers!

I used to have a Mog three wheeler, but sold it when the values skyrocketed...although I didn't drive it much as it was irreplacable - I still kinda regret selling it.
