    An alternative

    I've read this thread from start to finish, and I will soon be constructing weedeater powered longtail, but I'm struck by the fact that there's been no mention of the low tech alternative for getting up a stream in shallow water: the push pole.

    Good, it worked. I plan to have a bamboo pole in adittion to the much muffled weedeater longtail.

    Have push poles reached the apex of their development? Yes. It happened when the propeller was applied and it was made to spin.

    Maybe I missed it, but what about the bearings in the weed eater?

    Wouldn't they wear out real quick in water?

    Weed eater bearings under water can be a greased wood bushing further lubricated by water.

    Wow, I got tired and am sore just watching that guy push pole upstream. I do have a question, why didn't he float downstream to take the pics he did? Why work so hard to go upstream?

    i still have my old islandhopper outboard from back when they still sold to california. back then they had 2 stroke bridgestone titan motors, i have their 35cc version. the motors they have now are 4stroke but the prop and gearcase are the same as before. the prop is about 7in 3blade for an electic trolling motor...way overpropped so i would say no r&d work on prop performance was done by island hopper. as far as building the same exact outboard for 150 bucks could u post who u source from? the lowest price i could find for a 50cc 2stroke from monsterscooter was 125
