    composite / alloy / thailand

    Hello Jack,

I have facilities to build in either composite or alloy in Thailand. Australian designs and others.

Arnie Duckworth - the founder of ATL lives here in Phuket by the way.

I have 1 X british Naval Architect and 1 X Australia Naval Architect both of whom design in alloy.

Arnie is developing a combination structure - alloy to above the waterline for strength and impact damage plus ease of welding in engine beds.

Joined to that ATL composite panels.

I am working with Alcan- Pechinery - and will be ordering around 20,000 Kg of alloy Sealium to build three 15.4 metre performance sailing cats here in Thailand.

Try Gavin Mair of Global Yacht Designs WA Australia for power cat designs and kits boats. There have been a number built here.

What is the boat going to be for???

    14.5 x 5 x 3.5 (airdraft) motorised cat

    Dear Bob

Saw your reply to Jack Frost and thought you might be able to assist me.
I am looking for someone to build me the above to 'lock up stage' and then have shipped to UK for completion. Build material will be either ATL or West systems. I have very a clear idea of my ideal layout and requirements, and if you could put me in touch with the designers you mentioned to Jack, I would appreciate it.

I am looking for a builder to construct the above to 'lock up' stage, and then ship back to the UK as ship cargo. Build material either ATL or West systems.
    Interested ?

    building in Asia

    Hello Chris C,

There are a number of builders capable of doing a complete fit out here. There is no need to take the boat back to the UK for finishing. I know Arnie Duckworth personally ( ATL). The comments about Thailand and other Asia countries producing sub standard work is rubbish. Yes there are some lousy builders here but that can be said about western builders to. A well supervised build ( western supervision and practices) will deliver a good quality boat. The labour costs here a lower but the man hours involved quite often are around 33% more due to the local labour practices.

For me you can get aroudn alloy as a construction material. I see mentioned in the replies Langkawi just south of Thailand and Phuket. I know all the guys at Wavemaster - they have knew owners taking over at this moment. The yard looks professional and has all the gear - the old owners to put it mildly belonged in a circus not a boatyard. My hope it that they will progress with a new Australian team getting the show back on the road.
If you are happy to deal direct send me your email address and we can talk. After being in the area for soem 10 years I know my way around.

There are a number of designs available in alloy as well for your purpose.

The corrosion issues a pretty good propagand by GRP and other builders - mostly born of a lack of knowledge in teh products available. We are going to build out of Alcan Sealium for the French areospace yard. Specifically designed for marine use.

We could design the vessel you require. I have the resource of 2 X Australian designers and 2 X British designers. There is a whole world of oportunities out there. I even have contacts in Japan. You can buy and ex Japanese fishing vessel of around 50 metres designed to fish in the Sea Of Japan in seriously bad conditions with all the gear imagingable aboard for some 250,000/300,000US$ and convert it to a pleasure yacht. A freind of mine is doing this as a full time business for customers.

What sort of boat do you want?? Hope it is a catamaran!!!

So drop me off you email address so we can chat.

    Power Cat research

Can you post a http. or www. address for this discussion? For some reason I could not find it.

Is your intention to do another power cat? I am doing a little informal research into the power cat market in general, and have developed a few ideas. I also have a boatowner in Singapore who is interested in some of my concepts. So I wondered what you might be considering in 'a next boat'

    reply to Jack Ventura 44

    Hello Jack,

Interesting that you have a Ventura from Seawind. Did you buy it new?? Richard Ward is a good freind. He will be up this way to do teh Phuket Boatshow in December. Would say he would be happy to have one of his cats on display and you would like to have it there for sale. Suggest you get in contact with Seawind and see what can be arranged. Would be good for both of you.

I caught up with Richard at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show back in June.

Are you getting out of boats or into a new one?

There should be agood oportunity to sell at the show. It can also be added to a website I am building www.bareboat-catamarans.com Suggest you also consider listing with Michele Pippen of Pippen Marine Langkawi.

Iwas just down there from Phuket a few days ago for a meeting at Wavemaster.

    Good luck selling.

Wow so much interest, I thought this thread was dead. Well to try to answer all the queries in one go. Yes I will do something else,-- but absalutely no idea what. Yes I know Michele. I am sure Richard will remember me. Not sure about going to Thailand for the Phuket boat show. Phuket boat lagoon is soooo expensive. I have a house there but if you go by boat__oh its a pain --Customs, immigration, not like Malaysia.

Yes power cats are becoming extremely popular and so they should , for round here there they are perfect. Even with the fuel price increase I am not concerned as I use very little fuel for a 24KT boat.
Shafts through the transom?? should be there Ill have a look and post again.

Ok its a spelling difference. Do a search on 'Shafts thru the transom' Its basically discusing the surface prop design and advantages and the story of my experimentations. Not the whole thread mind you just a small part of it. My cat can achieve a very easy cruising speed of 17 Kts at 3200 RPM max RPM 4200. The surface props are vibration free and have to be experienced.. Sea wind use 300 HP engines, I have acieved the same speed with 2x250 HP. I think Sea wind say a wieght iof 12 tons , I have not managed such a light wieght unless they mean dry wieght which would make me the same.

    Hello Jack,

I would say Richard would most likely pay for a floating berth for the Ventura to display his product and at the same time it can be offered for sale. Thai immigration, customs and harbour master are no big deal. Not as easy as Langkawi but not that bad. Checking in there are no fees. I can be there to help when you check in to avoid problems. After 10 years of checking in and living in Phuket I know the tricks. Suggest you get in contact with Richard and make a offer to see what his response is.

I will be down to Langkawi again around the 10th September will try and catch up.

    Cheers

Bob-- Bin there 16 years--Musta checked in at phuket 10 + times I hate the one stop check in at Ao Chalaong, 20,000 baht bond at the bank just to be able to stay longer than a month, twisting your cap in front of an official begging for permission to keep the boat in Thailand longer than 6 months(12 months max). and then they try you on for mooring fees another 2000 baht-- you know what its like??
Well any way its not beyond doing its just a chore.
Richard is well aware of where I am. I got the immpression that he was not overly suited with my surface propulsion. My fit out is of Mai yom hom ( thai for wood that smells nice ) it is hand made and finished by Nai and To . It is just slightly different from Richards design although his Sea wind catalogue was used as a plan . As I have two steering stations, the main being below where as his has one up ' MV VIXEN' would not therefore be representative of his boats. Although i say this externally even the stainless steel work is identicall .
Ille bet you know my mate Adam the rigger??? Its a puzzle why I dont know you!! My name isnt really jack frost.
