DESCRIPTION

The selectee of this position serves as a Naval Architect in the Boat Engineering Branch. The Boat Engineering Branch is responsible for initiation, development and review of all design work for new construction, modernization, overhaul, conversion, maintenance, repair and engineering changes of high-speed marine vehicles, small cutters and boats.

The incumbent of this position is responsible for all aspects of naval architecture of high speed advanced marine vehicles, small cutters and boats including hydrodynamics, sea-keeping maneuvering, stability, resistance, propulsion and structure. Conducts stress analysis studies for structural outfit, develop conceptual design studies for proposed vessels based on operational requirements and develop plans and specifications for boat structure. As a naval architect the incumbent designs and analyzes the total boat structure and structural components for new cutters and boats in steel, and aluminum composites. Serves as the technical expert within the Branch in the field of structural fabrication procedures, and troubleshooting naval architecture and marine craft, determining solutions to those problems. The incumbent is also responsible for developing engineering alterations including drawings and specifications to describe the specific corrective modifications to be made. Responsible for designing boats with emphasis on conceptual, preliminary and detail design of small craft including lines plan development and fairing, weight estimating, floodable length and stability, structural analyses and power requirement. The incumbent works with computer programs such as NAVCAD, GHS, MAESTRO, RHINO and Ship Constructor, should be familiar with Computer Aided Design with AutoCAD.
