Perhaps what is meant is pakeha = Maori for long pig = for polite circles, white man.

    Gentlemen, a little patience please.

Silver Raven ... I think you meant me when calling 'luckysmoke'.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) english is a foreign language for me and normally not easy to understand when slang expressions are used in some posts here on the forum. So I have no Idea what kind of language you are talking ... in the best way I understand just 1/3 of that what you are writing.

When I have a wrong information, why don't you correct me and tell me who invented the cylinder molding technique. Could be a useful information for me ... could'nt it?

Otherwise I think your mouth is not much smaller than Kurt's if I interpret your letters-salad right. You have no reason to deface my nickname and offend me in saying I smoke something forbidden (in my country, I don't know if it's allowed where you live).

Again ... I like Hughes' designs and his favor for cheap and fast boats and I think he is a very good designer. For sure Kurt Hiughes is no superstar among the designers like Irens or VPLP, but he has drawn some fair boats for people that have to work for their money and enabled them to build "their boat". That has nothing to do with his lack of diplomacy in his pr-work. Not everybody can be a advertising-pro like Ian Farrier.

    Best Regards, Michel

IF is far from an advertising pro. Take a look at any of his interactions with Mike Leneman on any of several forums available and you'll see the same behaviors exhibited. Sad, but true.

Yes Gary, and in its traditional usage we have been having a roast! (long pig was the traditional native dish that served the 2 legged variety)

Hello Michel, Most of us said they liked some of his boats, the problem is his conduct towards the people he would like to call his peers. Ian Farrier for example is a better engineer and another "original". He was the one who came up with the folding system that became the industry standard for the last 30 years and his boats have been better performers. I am hoping Kurt will hear about these posts and modify his conduct. Indulging in self aggrandizement while making unequal comparisons to the work of others to justify yourself isn't in good taste or rational. Your customers might start wondering if your designs have things that are as ill-considered. So let your work stand for itself Hughes, we're getting full at the luau.

    Hi Roger,

I don't know on which Forum Ian Farrier is posting.

At least his is own website is very professional.

Perhaps offending each other is a funny game between all the designers like the celebreties do. If so, then I think this is a poor game and we are the fools, because we make us thoughts about good behavior.

I'm just curious as to how this "design" forum got itself off on a completely disconnected, personalized set of rants about the opinions of Kurt Hughes with regards to other designers. It would seem to be entirely off topic to indulge yourselves about personal issues when the reason for participating is supposed to be all about the design considerations.

Perhaps a revisit to post number 1 is in order so that things may get back on track? Failing that, perhaps a new topic in the Open Discussion area is more appropriate?

    Sorry my english...
the problem is his conduct towards the people he would like to call his peers

Do you mean "his behavior towards the people he would like to call his customers"???????

If yes ... you are right. I think his article "post apocalyptic boatbuilding " was a very good example of good pr, at least in a philosophical way, showing the advantages of wooden K.H. Designs without offending other people. Just saying that "folding chairs" :D:D:D (sorry, thats the funny meant name for Farriers and Dragonflies in our waters ... could'nt resist to use it) do have real disadvantages.

Yes, we are far off topic, perhaps an admin should clean up and delete the (dis)related posts.

Permission to do so with my posts.

My tasks to Kurt for the new 27 were to have:
    -fast and light boat
-able to fly 2 hulls (like seacart)
    -with lifting foils on amas
    -rudders on amas
-with enough space inside to do offshore racing and some small cruising (not like the seacart 26 that I personally went to sail ,and it was like a hobiecat with no space inside)
-able to sail in 0,1 knots up to 40 or more
    -easy demountable
    and many more.

Still a lot of work to do on it i reckon, but the concept looks OK.

    Ciao

Thanks Simmo, for your last post, for explaining the requirements you had / wanted for your new boat.

May be the thread may get back on track now as well. As every one has expressed their opinion as to his comments as to other designers.

Luckystrike, Mike lenman acts much the same way on Ian Farriers forum when mast or design aspect comes up, criticizing Ian Farriers work.

Ah, don't get too precious and polite, people, about "staying on track"; there was a reaction to KH's arrogant comments ... but that's okay. we're all big boys - and KH (perhaps) will think twice before mouthing off again. Anyway a little poking the borax makes for entertaining reading, spices up the threads. We can agree to disagree later.
To repeat; I particularly like Kurt Hughes later designs and agree with his excellent apocalypse boat building philosophy.

Thanks for describing your brief for the design Simmo. What construction method are you looking at for the new boat and how was Muffalo constructed? What is the multihull racing scene like in your area are there many competitors? Is there a handicap system and how does it work? Do you have any preliminary thoughts on what sort of sail area you are going to run on the boat? What category safety rating are you aiming at for the boat category 3? Hope thats not too many questions, cheers.

So, it's OK to poke at Kurt, but not OK to poke at Newick, or Farrier? Is that how that works for you?

Make sure you check this against the realities of the issue. Kurt's comments were posted on his blog and not on a public forum that is supposed to deal with design issues. Kurt's comments are one way bits of communication and not an open microphone session, such as you find here. He's a designer of more than a little merit himself and he gets to say what he feels from his perspective. Every one of these guys who dance about the region in question have way more than a passing bit of ego involved. It goes with the title in order to pull off the jobs for which they are commissioned. You guys getting all frothy about the comments will do nothing to Kurt's cash flow. For each of you who are feigning indignance, there will be dozens who find Kurt's comments to be spot on, leading to the sales of more plans.

I didn't see his comments as arrogant in any way. There's an old saying in sport. "If you can do it, it isn't bragging". I read Kurt's comments as going to great lengths to detail his admiration of Newick's work before he said what has apparently riled the troops here. This is a modern world and there's no place for treating these guys in question as if they were so much royalty. They are just men and should be open to whatever constructive criticism on a personal blog that is appropriate. If you don't like the way it's worded, then first take a long look back in your postings to see how many times you have talked out of turn.

I wonder. How many of you actually backed up your angst with a personal note to Kurt?
