Has anyone tried a solar oven?

Drifting around the net, looking for ideas to reduce my electrical needs I stumbled upon a hideous satellite dish looking object claiming to be a solar oven.

Apparently these things are being handed out in India by do-gooders trying to reduce the use of wood fuel in domestic kitchens.

My vote a microwave /convection oven combo. Takes up the space of a med. size microwave. We have one here at the B&B, one in the landyacht and one will be installed in the new boat.

Solar ovens do work, but they must be pointed at the sun.

Sorta hard with out a 4 point moor or a jacking spud barge.

Home Power magazine used to do an annual solar oven contest. The idea was to construct a solar oven that could cook an entire meal, within a reasonable time, (I seem to recall 40 minutes) for a typical third-world family. It was limited to using materials that might be (generally) easy to find/salvage in that same third-world country. It's been quite some time since I've had access to the magazine, but the process had merit.

Brian--where did you take that photo. My friend has been looking for his BBQ and awning all summer. Even has a reward out for it. Apparently it was stolen off his plastic space ship early spring while on the hard. The culprit must feel pretty confident he got away with it as the only disguise was adding wheels. :D

    Propane with a pressure gauge.

Turn it off when you leave the boat, if the static pressure has decreased on the gauge when you return, you have a leak.

Soap water in a spray bottle will reveal your leak.

    Repair and enjoy.

    Induction Cooktop

Just found this old subject thread of mine and thought I might restart it with the subject of Induction Cooktops. Sense I began with a Nuwave product, I thought I would first post their new model of induction cookware

I'm sure there are some shorter presentaions available on youtube, this is just the main one I ran across.

The point is I think this technology definitey has a place on our vessels in lieu of the propane cooktops and the old style electric cooktops. There are a number of other manufacturers entering this market.

2 problems I see if you're not running a generator system (or plugging into a shore power socket every day).

1000 W medium setting equals 83 amps at 12V from your battery bank. Don't know about others but I really don't want to run a generator just so I can cook.

No mention of its water resistance rating. What happens if it gets soaked in salt water?

I'll stick with bottled gas or kerosene. I can carry months of fuel simply and compactly.

I'm wondering if your figures are a reality? If so I'm not sure that any electric cooktop could be utilized on a vessel powered by batteries and inverters,....yet there are a growing number that are doing so.

    Wikapedia excerpt

I'm hoping to look at a few more details on how these cooktops actually operate, and most importantly what their max current draw is, and for what duration??

Im on my third Bosche induction cooktop over twenty years.

Why they fail is a mystery to me. I suspect poor voltage supply. Something in thier electronic printed ciruit brain goes wrong.

I like the induction top becase of its efficency and the fact that it doesnt heat the interior of the boat.

I belive my four burner. top is two 2000w and two 3000w burners.

    A chefs induction would be 5000 w

It may be possible to power via inverter but you will need a big one.

For inverter cooking i use a 1000w portible cooktop.

    I went to the source.....

So if my figures don't reflect reality, the FAQ is wrong.
