I didn't say I enjoyed them - I said I like them - because in my environment it makes much, much more sense.

I tell you what, you bring your 60mpg 3cyl Blu-Motion VW here and in 5 years time we can compare - which vehicle is still running and what the maintenance costs were.

I'm certainly not averse to high-tech. It's how I make my living, after all. I'm quite addicted to 150+HP motorcycles, as it happens - not Hardley-Ablesons. But a BMW K1200RS doesn't make much sense in a country with a) No BMW dealership b) No trained mechanics c) No electronic diagnostic equipment d) roads that were designed to test suspension, not facilitate smooth and effortless driving.

And your idea of frugal is relative - compared to other 40+ton boats it may be frugal, compared to my outdated pushrod engined, carburetted, ladder-frame chassis, live-axle, 50s technology Jeep it is a veritable glutton.

But then using logic doesn't seem to have any merit in this discussion.

It's all about my flagrant waste of resources

    Anyway, I'm done with this - I can't be dealing with <insult removed>.

Since you know so much I take it you wont be bothering me again with pm's asking for advice.

Don't call people stupid, and for bad manners I deduct rep points, Oh and BMW k1200 is not 150HP nor is my boat 40 tons try to read peoples post and reply properly.

PM's? I asked you once. About the location of something - not exactly calling upon a vast pool of expertise, was it?

Don't flatter yourself. I've seen the quality of your posts - you won't be pressed into service.

I ask myself why I don't prefer outboards. Being able to fix an engine in the boat with a small toolbox is a big one. A big savings, maybe 25%, would trump simplicity. Until then KISS is more time running and less time frustrated waiting for a mechanic :)

It was from a vast pool of experience that I knew about Labuan a little Island not 50 miles from you where you can buy some epoxy for your little project. Is being greatfull for my help too much for you?, you cant bring yourself to say thank can you

Saying' thank you' is traditional, but expecting manners from you would be pointless.

However I cant understand what it is your doing here any way. This is a forum of sea men who repair anything and everything whilst at sea. You think you can beat your chest because you pull over to the side of the road in the warm Brunei sunshine to fix your little motorbike .

And whats this 4 wheel drive toy stuff. Is Tesco at the top of the mountain.

What is it about 4 wheel drivers. Buy a Toyota with a winch on it and think they are Macho man.

So you running VW engines in your boat then? Think they're as easy to troubleshoot as a carb 454?

Is that to me Imp or some one else. I dont think Zoot has a boat.

If so then No Imp I dont have VW engines --I rented a new eco VW in London which seems to have incredibly annoyed people for excess use of fuel.

My Engines are Marine diesels built by Yanmars with shaft drives, at 250 HP each.

Mercruiser took over selling VW TDI from cummins this year. 350 horsepower and 811 lbs. But the savings would never pay for a swap in 10 years I don't think.

811 lbs is unacceptable --the Yanmar 6LP are much less than that more like half.

When building a frugal cat the weight has to be never forgotten.

Its not my preferred engine but weight was absolute paramount importance which had priority over engine choice.

At 15000 dollars each 10 years ago I was dissapointed to find they were base Toyota IHD engines, but my dissapointment subsided when I realized I was not held to ALL Yanmars prices and parts.

The difference in oil filters for instance is nothing but disgusting.
