A page with some videos from Raw Nerve and Raw to the Core. Martyn Riley's Raw Nerve a Crowther/Bloomfield Southern Ocean 50 catamaran held the race record for the Brisbane to Gladstone record for many years (it took Team Australia's ORMA60 KAS to break their record). It was a troubled boat that lost its rig a number of times and also had a beam failure at one stage. Martyn's commitment to multihull ocean racing was only matched by the number of times he had to reach into his wallet for new parts to replace the broken bits. There is no doubting however that it was capable of some impressive speed and it is a part of multihull history in Australia. It has been sold of recent times and is now based in Pittwater awaiting a new rig and more of a toned down approach for cruising/racing. Raw to the Core has been refitted by 'Big' Tony Holt and is going to be tearing around again soon it's built to Formula 28 specs.

A bit off topic in the web sense but Phil (Catsketcher) has written up a brilliant profile on Dick Newick in the latest Multihull World Australia it's worth the price of the magazine for the article alone.

I don't know about the MK2, but the original had a bad rep for capsize.

It was a hot boat and they detuned it for the Mk2 but I've only heard of 1 or 2 capsizing.

Will look forward to that when it comes out here. I wish someone would write a proper bio of Dick Newick and document all his designs - not just the popular ones.

Simple but effective alloy design, somewhat brutal in appearance, 18 metre foil trimaran Gautier 111 designed by Sylvestre Langevin in 1982 for the La Rochelle/New Orleans race. Note the experimental double sided mainsail. Gautier was fast but lost the rig while leading during the first week. Christian Fevrier photograph.

Gary, did the main hull also have a foil?
Also interesting the system to adjust the foil on the float.

No foil in the main hull but yes, angle of foil adjustment was simple and clever.

Can you post any detail on the foil adjustment system?

Here's an enlargement; looks to be hydraulic.
I made a mistake - it was in the Route du Rhum while leading that Gautier broke her rig; the tri was 5th in La Rochelle/New Orleans.
There actually was another foil in the main hull, a balancing board for the varying sail areas carried.

Here's another of Gautier 111; this before she lost rig in Route du Rhum.
