    I never quite understood the term high thrust . As was noted there are several different ratios available for standard OBs. In the end these gear ratios must match the performance characteristics of the engine ?

    Looking at the poll results displayed, I see two interesting points:
    1. The majority of responses are from those with carburated engines, probably reflecting the population of carb vs FI engines.
    2. For both carb and FI engines, the overwhelming majority of responses say the engines run reliably, with few or no problems. That appears to be a testament to the reliability of modern outboards in general.

    One of the biggest advantages in using outboards for commercial applications is that you can avoid downtime altogether... you simply unbolt one and stick on another.
    In my experience modern outboards are so reliable that it matters little which one you choose. Of course, there will always be the odd lemon out there, but far better to choose on the basis of the motor's suitability to the task, than any percieved reliability issues from a few forum members, IMHO...
