I just bought 10M of uni-directional glass- fibre from former FGI and got shocked at the price being about 3 time the cost of 12 months ago. Perhaps Silver Raven has the right idea, we should get in pool and get it send over from the States.

    Glass Prices

I bought the 8.5 oz cloth and 3.16 oz cloth from ebay. A guy in North Carolina that seems to have bought out a warehouse or something and has millions of yards of the stuff.

The biax I bought at a local marine surplus. There are a lot of boatbuilders that went out of business the last few years and this place near me has bought up a lot of that inventory. Ended up costing me around .50 per square yard. It was such a good deal because it was so heavy and hard for them to move. They just wanted get rid of it. Should be enough to sheath the whole boat and tape all the seams.

Close - but not to close - he he

Gooday - 'raving-shoe' - s-r, james here - 14 ks due west of the lights @ Kuranda turn-off - inland - up the Barron River - @ Oakforest. I suspect 'groper' might be in 'Yorkies' ???

Groper - is surely doing a fabulous job - I'm sure I'm not alone in being - very impressed & trusting he'll come out on top of all the little - learning curve - hic-ups. Much forward progress to you 'groper' ! ! !

Sure hope the light drizzle doesn't stuf-you-up to much. Off to 'Bunnings - Smithy for a much bigger - very heavy duty tarp, he. Ciao, james

PS This bringing 'exoctics' in from the USA is - without doubt much, much cheaper than buying the same materials here in OZ however it's not without some bother. Forward ordering - forward paying - time delay etc etc then getting - said materials delivered to wherever in OZ from Darwin - can be a bother - but at something like 1/2 price - it would be the way I'd look at going if I decide to build here in OZ.

Boatguy sure has a bargin there @ 50 cents/sq yrd - that's a real big WOW as far as pricing - shame there isn't more quantity.

    Caio, everyone, james

Very observant Silver Raven, i am indeed within a stones throw of Yorkies... just a short move of about 1km with crane and truck to get my project splashed when the time comes... got the first hull shoe joined today :D do the second next week, then the fun begins standing up all the bulkheads and beams which ive already made...

Uh oh, James is looking for exotics from the US and a boat to go to SE Asia, I'd better come clean and point out I don't participate in Any illegal activities......I'm surprised at the cost of materials in Oz. The PNW is timber country so a wood build here makes sense. Many people though don't get the experience of wood types and grain structure any more to really take full advantage of the material. Foam is easy because of the uniformity...

I think you've got it the wrong way round. From what I've heard he'd be better off visiting SEA then proceeding on heavy to the US....:)

Seriously though, looking through the boat sales foam adds a tremendous amount to resale.

BTW that Nicol I mentioned for $22k has disappeared, presumably he found a buyer. :)

They are a lot of boat for the money.....Yes foam adds resale but I really like the feel and look of a wood boat so better deals for people like me ( I think there are maybe 2 or 3). The structure gives more points of interest to your eyes over the long run in a wood boat. Foam glass is sort of like sitting in a plastic bowl, practical but that's about it.

    Gday Silver Raven.
Nice location yours, not too far from the city and dry country.
It might be some trouble to get the material send over from the states but half price is some thing surly. In a project where in Oz would cost 20K in resin, foam and glass one can save 10K. Well worthy the trouble hey.
I am thinking to get into building a boat some time in the near future, is there any chance to squeeze in my stuff in your container next time and share the shipping costs.?
What r u building with the exotic materials from the US any way?
    Cheers

Hi Cavalier. You only have to own a timber boat and live in the Wet tropics to change idea. The structure would give you more then some point of interest to the eyes and pockets.
    Cheers.

Hey Yachtie thats why we use epoxy, plenty of boats done well last, even with traditional methods. There is no arguing that foam is more tolerant of neglect etc....Plenty of old wood multihulls in Oz still going strong though.

    Materials - Which way ???

Gooday 'guss' With great respect - maybe I haven't got it round the wrong way ??? Don't believe all you hear (or read - for that matter) he he. I've been in the FRP industry since 1961 - here in OZ - I've improted a few items over the past couple of years from overseas - partly due to my contacts in the industry both here & overseas. I made enough profit (but not greedy) to keep doing it. At this point - I don't need to do anything other than - cover my costs. Don't need to generate a 'profit' as such - hence my open comment - to assist if people were interested.

I'm sure not short $100's or even $1000's - for sure would like (read as - sure am ) short $3 or $4 or $5 million, but not little bits. Life is to valuable for that.

What I said was - maybe people should look into importing 'exoctics' & other marine items - from the USA - - legally (cav - all paper work done out in the open) in a container - which has lots of spare room inside - comming into Darwin 2 to 5 times a year - fully disclosed - import taxes & all expenses etc paid & officially declared @ well under 1/2 price to what is available here in OZ.

I'm not sure I properly understood your 2nd para - did you mean - that there are lots of boats for sale around the world & at very good prices ??? Cause - there sure is ! !

I didn't say I 'was going to' build a yacht here in OZ - I did say - 'IF' I was going to build a boat here in OZ. For sure I can (read as - am trying to) buy a vessel - overseas - at a very good price & then go cruising & racing.

Even as a semi-retired yacht builder I couldn't build - what I can buy - anywhere close to what I can buy - used in SE Asia - for 1/6th the price.

Aside from all that - I'm over 70 & don't want to build a boat - I WANNA-GO-SAILING instead. When I'm sitting on-deck c/w bill of sale in my hot 'lill hand & a 'sundowner of si(e)x' in other hand - then I'll tell you all what I just bought. Until then - mummmm is the word. Enjoy & good health everyone, jj

All valid comments, I think he needs to rethink a little and and consider his and possible passengers safety before putting to sea in a box of Matches.
I see the word easy a lot I have built one and can assure you for $30000 you can only just build the hulls rudders and steering without labor.

Gooday Bernie. Who is "he" & what is "before putting to sea in a box of matches" - relevant to ??? Whilst I am buying a boat - sailing tri - at a very reasonable price - I have no false belief that by the time - it is 'safe' - complete - ready to sail & complete - - I'll have spent well over $100K AUD - & - only that little if I keep very tight control on my purchases.

I sure agree with you "see the word easy a lot" & we know that nothing that pushes the bounderies of 'normal' is 'easy' in any way.I'm a semi-retired yacht builder & boat building/repairing company owner & - even without labour anyone would be hard pressed to get as low as $30K AUD - however far you got along with that process.

There are many methods of manufacture - taht enable a builder to make a boat 'safe' without - "putting to sea in a box of matches" - it just requires proper materials & production methods. Ciao, james

PS. Are yu going sailing in the races at Hamo & Airley ??? Good luck. jj
